Kansas City Pizza Lovers Keep Packing Into These 8 Neighborhood Spots For Thin, Crackly Slices

Kansas City may be famous for barbecue, but the local pizza scene has quietly built a loyal following of its own. Across the metro, small neighborhood shops are turning out thin, crisp slices that hold their shape and still pile on the toppings.

Some lean New York, some go St. Louis style with Provel, and a few mix in Detroit squares or East Coast char. This list covers eight spots from the Northland to Waldo where the crust is the star, the prices stay friendly, and the tables fill up fast on Friday nights.

Save it for your next pizza night, or send it to the friend who always argues about crust.

1. Northeast Pizza, Kansas City, MO

Lexington Avenue in the Historic Northeast has a newer reason to slow down. Northeast Pizza sits at 2203 Lexington Ave, and it has already settled in as a true neighborhood pizza stop.

The style here is thin East Coast crust that stays crisp without going floppy. Slices are big, toppings are generous, and the sauce is made in house.

Pepperoni fans will spot the small cupped kind that curls up at the edges.

The Brooklyn Margherita is a highlight, and it is vegan, which is a nice touch for mixed groups. There is also a full vegetarian menu and a simple house salad if you want something green next to your slice.

Service is counter style and quick, so it works well for a solo lunch. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 9 PM and Sunday until 8 PM, closed Mondays.

Free street parking is usually easy to find, but Friday and Saturday evenings get busy, and reservations are not taken.

2. Leo’s Pizza, Kansas City, MO

Cracker thin and cut into squares, the pizza at Leo’s is the kind Northland families have been ordering for years. This family-run spot on NW Englewood Road keeps things simple, and that is the whole appeal.

Leo’s leans into St. Louis style. The crust is super thin and crisp, the sauce is bright and zesty, and the creamy Provel cheese gives each bite that signature gooey pull.

Toppings are piled on generously.

If someone in your group is not in a pizza mood, the Italian steak sandwich and salads are on the menu too.

I would save this one for a laid-back weeknight with the kids. High chairs are available, there is a free lot, and the room is cozy enough to catch a game.

Hours run Tuesday through Thursday 11 AM to 9 PM, Friday and Saturday until 10:30 PM, and Sunday from 3 to 9 PM. Mondays are closed.

3. Pizza 51, Kansas City, MO

A former garage on Oak Street now handles a very different kind of fill-up. Pizza 51 sits at 5060 Oak St, close to the UMKC campus, and its outdoor patio is one of the easiest hangout spots in the area.

The slices are huge, thin, and crispy, with a little char on the crust and a solid balance of sauce to dough. Grab a slice from the counter or build your own pie, including a gluten-free option.

The menu goes beyond pizza. Toasted ravioli, a nod to Missouri tradition, shows up alongside meatball subs and calzones.

Salads are large enough to share.

Dogs are welcome on the patio, which makes it handy after a walk. It is open daily, with later hours until 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, and there is a free lot nearby.

4. Waldo Pizza, Kansas City, MO

Choice is the name of the game at Waldo Pizza. This longtime Waldo neighborhood institution on Broadway offers a long list of crusts, sauces, and toppings, so no two orders have to look alike.

Thin-crust fans should go straight for the St. Louis style thin crust. Adding garlic butter is a popular move, and the specialty pies get creative.

The Deluxe Tex Mex brings spicy beef, roasted corn, cheddar, and taco sauce together on one pizza.

The salad bar is another reason families keep coming back. There is also a full vegan menu, a full vegetarian menu, gluten-friendly options, and a kids’ menu.

Unlike most spots on this list, Waldo Pizza accepts reservations, which helps on busy weekend nights. It opens at 4 PM on Mondays and 11 AM the rest of the week, closing at 9 PM daily.

5. Buffalo State Pizza Co. & Bar, Kansas City, MO

Downtown lunch breaks get a serious upgrade on Wyandotte Street. Buffalo State Pizza Co. sits at 1815 Wyandotte St in the Crossroads area and serves big New York style slices.

The crust is thin with a well-charred bottom, sometimes baked right up to a blackened crisp. Sauce and toppings stay balanced, so the slice folds without falling apart.

Want something squarer? The Stockyard Sicilian is a thicker option, and the calzone and breadsticks round out the menu.

There is even a pizza kit for making your own at home.

The room is roomy, relaxed, and good for groups, with outdoor seating and a kids’ menu. Street parking can be tricky downtown, so plan a few extra minutes.

It is open every day, with later hours until 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

6. Johnny Jo’s Pizzeria, Kansas City, MO

Just west of the Country Club Plaza, a small parlor on 47th Street has been baking pies in a stone oven for well over a decade. Johnny Jo’s Pizzeria is compact, but the pizzas are not.

Expect thin, light crust with a crisp bottom, a sauce with a gentle kick of spice, and plenty of cheese. Large pies are the main event, though Margherita by the slice is an easy grab.

Garlic knots and stromboli make strong sidekicks, and a cannoli is a sweet way to finish.

Plan your timing, since hours are short. It is open Tuesday through Thursday from 4 to 9 PM and Friday and Saturday until 9:30 PM, closed Sunday and Monday.

There is no restroom on site, and parking can fill up, so takeout is a smart move.

7. Providence By The Slice, Kansas City, MO

Two pizza styles, one counter. Providence By The Slice on Westport Road serves thin East Coast slices and thick Detroit-style squares, so a group can settle the crust debate without leaving the building.

For this list, the thin side is the headline. The crust is crisp with a good char, and the slice lineup changes up with eclectic flavors next to classic pepperoni and cheese.

The Famous Rick Lang comes as a big 12 by 18 pie, and the Famous Pepperoni Detroit is the go-to for square fans. Cannoli are on hand for dessert.

It is a quick stop in the middle of Westport, with free wi-fi and high chairs. Hours run Tuesday through Thursday 11 AM to 9 PM, Friday and Saturday until 10 PM, and Sunday noon to 8 PM.

Street parking takes some patience.

8. Pizza Tascio – NKC, North Kansas City, MO

Late-night slice cravings have a dependable answer on Burlington Street. Pizza Tascio in downtown North Kansas City stays open until 11 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, later than any other Tascio location.

The slice case runs all day with cheese, pepperoni, and rotating specialty slices. The $10 combo gets you two big slices and a drink, every day in store.

Whole 18-inch pies are hand-stretched and baked on stone decks with Bianco DiNapoli tomatoes and whole-milk mozzarella. The thin crust folds easily and keeps a nice bite.

The shop has been voted KC’s Favorite Pizza by The Kansas City Star and Best Pizza in the Midwest by Midwest Living.

Gluten-free crust is available, and a Nutella pizza handles dessert. It is a short walk from the Iron District, with outdoor seating, though there is no restroom on site.
