Loaded Nachos Worth Sharing Are The Reason Groups Pack Into These 7 Connecticut Bars

Some plates are meant for one person, and some plates are meant for the whole table. Loaded nachos belong in that second group, and Connecticut has a handful of bars that take the job seriously.

The seven spots below range from a Southwestern grill in New Haven to a downtown hangout in Mystic, and each one serves a nacho platter big enough to feed a crowd. Grab your friends, bring your appetite, and pick a town.

1. Geronimo Tequila Bar and Southwest Grill – New Haven, New Haven, CT

Skulls on the walls and a fireplace inside set the tone at this Crown Street favorite. The look is rustic and Southwestern, and the low lighting makes it a natural evening meetup spot.

The loaded nachos are the group move here. One platter can easily feed three or four people, especially if the table adds a few small plates on the side.

Speaking of sides, the tableside guacamole is made fresh and served with chips. Other menu highlights include the Chimayo braised pork burrito, mahi tacos, chicken tortilla soup, and churros for dessert.

Hours run late every night, until 1 AM most days and 2 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. There is porch dining in nice weather and a full vegetarian menu.

Reservations are accepted, which helps on busy Tuesday and weekend evenings. Parking downtown can be tricky, so plan on a paid garage or lot.

2. Black Rock Tavern, Thomaston, CT

Thomaston is a small town, but the nachos at Black Rock Tavern are anything but small. The Ultimate Nachos come topped with beef and arrive as a seriously huge pile.

The tavern sits on Main Street and serves American bar food with some international flair. It also pours a strong craft beer lineup, and it is a popular stop for dinner before a show in town.

Beyond nachos, the menu offers a corned beef Reuben, smoked Gouda mac and cheese, and baked French onion soup. Kids get their own menu, including chicken tacos.

Plan around the schedule. The tavern is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and Thursday through Saturday evenings get busy.

The good news is that parking is free and usually easy. A private dining room is also available for bigger gatherings.

3. J Timothy’s Taverne, Plainville, CT

Few nacho spots can say their building dates to around 1789. J Timothy’s Taverne serves its food inside that historic structure, complete with a fireplace.

The nachos earn their spot through smart construction. Cheese goes throughout the chip layers, not just on top, so the bottom of the pile is as good as the first bite.

They are filling too. Many groups pair them with the famous dirty-style buffalo wings, the house specialty.

Other good choices include the tailgate pretzel, garlic bread with gorgonzola fondue, fried calamari, and teriyaki wings. The beer selection is large.

Expect a wait at peak times, especially Saturday afternoon into evening. Reservations help, parking is free, and the tavern is closed on Mondays.

4. Archie Moore’s Bar & Restaurant, Milford, CT

Buffalo flavor runs this show. At Archie Moore’s in Milford, the house nachos lean right into it with buffalo chicken, plenty of jalapeños, and blue cheese for dipping.

A word of caution for big appetites. The buffalo nachos are so filling that ordering them as a starter can leave little room for entrées.

The house-made blue cheese is a big part of the draw. It also shows up next to the buffalo wings, Thai chili wings, and buffalo calamari.

Pulled pork nachos are another option for groups who want variety. Fish and chips and potato skins round out the pub menu.

The Factory Lane spot stays open late, until 2 AM on weekends. Outdoor seating and free parking make it an easy pick for a crowd.

5. Wood-n-Tap- Hartford, Hartford, CT

The name on the menu says it all: Monster Nachos. Wood-n-Tap on Sisson Avenue serves a platter built for passing around.

The space is roomy and family-friendly, with TVs showing sports. That makes it easy to fit a big group on game night.

Tacos, calamari, tap room fries, bison burgers, and mac and cheese flatbread all make good company for the nachos. Engine 11 Firehouse Wings are another menu highlight.

Service moves quickly, and the kitchen stays open late most nights. There is also outdoor seating and a private dining room.

Parking is usually plentiful, with a free lot and street spots. Tuesday and Wednesday evenings get surprisingly busy, so book ahead.

6. Maggie McFly’s | Southbury, Southbury, CT

Ahi tuna nachos are not something every bar serves. Maggie McFly’s in Southbury offers them alongside a classic version loaded with toppings.

That variety fits the whole place. The menu is massive, with gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options, so mixed groups rarely struggle to order.

Fried mac and cheese and seafood paella stand out among the many choices. Brunch is served on Sundays starting at 10 AM.

Weekends bring live music and karaoke, which explains why Saturday evening is the busiest time. Outdoor dining is available too.

Parking is easy with a free lot, and reservations are accepted.

7. Chapter One Food and Drink Mystic CT, Mystic, CT

A day in downtown Mystic builds an appetite, and Chapter One sits right on West Main Street to handle it. The nachos come with a variety of fresh toppings and a generous portion size.

The setting is relaxed, with a long bar and banquettes that suit a group. Live music and drink specials add to the evening crowd.

The menu also covers classic seafood, dry-aged steaks, and burgers. Highlights include a hot lobster roll, bacon-wrapped scallops, RI calamari, and shrimp scampi.

Breakfast and brunch run on weekends, and the bar stays open until 2 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. Dinner reservations are recommended.

Street parking is free, with paid lots nearby for busy tourist days.
