Mexican Tortas Stacked Taller Than Your Hand Are Worth Finding At These 4 New Jersey Taquerias

A good torta is not a dainty sandwich. It is a soft, toasted roll packed with meat, beans, cheese, avocado, and peppers until it barely closes, and the best ones in New Jersey can stand taller than your hand.

From a tiny Pennsauken counter to an early-bird kitchen in Red Bank, these four taquerias take the torta seriously, and each one does it a little differently. Grab a napkin, or maybe five, and start planning your next lunch run.

When a restaurant puts both of its specialties right in the name, it is making a promise. On Westfield Avenue in Pennsauken, that promise gets kept in a very big way.

The torta here is famously enormous, the kind you might want to split or save half of for later. Tacos share the spotlight, with chicken tacos as a menu favorite, and birria is a big part of what the kitchen is known for.

Chicken flautas are another strong reason to order beyond the sandwich. Prices stay friendly, usually landing around $10 to $20 per person.

The space is small and plain, with few frills and a little lounge area. Service moves fast, the staff are friendly, and it works just as well for a solo lunch as it does for a group or a family with kids.

A couple of practical notes help. The shop is open 11 AM to 9 PM every day except Tuesday, when it is closed, and parking can take a minute to sort out.

Weekend afternoons draw the biggest crowds, so a weekday visit is the calmer choice.

There is no delivery, so plan on dining in or picking up. Call ahead at 856-236-0051 if you want your torta ready to go.

2. Tortas Lokas, Passaic, NJ

Look for the tiny Mexican flag poking out of the top of your sandwich. At Tortas Lokas, it is planted on tortas so big that takeout containers are a regular part of the meal.

The name means crazy tortas, and the menu lives up to it. The signature Torta Loka leads the way, joined by the Torta Chilanga, the Torta Ranchera, and the very honestly named Torta Que Me Llena, which roughly translates to the torta that fills me up.

Not in a sandwich mood? The pambazo, Tacos Campechanos, and birria chilaquiles make strong backups, and the restaurant also offers full vegetarian and vegan menus.

Value is a big draw here. Tortas have been known to come in under $10, with very cheap tacos on the side, so a full meal rarely stretches far.

Hours are generous at 10 AM to 10 PM daily, which makes it an easy pick for breakfast, a late lunch, or dinner. Families get high chairs and a kids’ menu, reservations are accepted, and delivery is available too.

Free street parking exists along Main Avenue, though spots can be tight on Friday nights and weekend afternoons.

3. Torta Truck, Jersey City, NJ

Birria fans, Central Avenue has your number. Torta Truck in the Jersey City Heights builds its reputation on birria tortas and tacos packed with tender, fall-apart meat.

Plenty of Jersey City eaters put it at the top of their personal torta rankings, and the focus on layered Mexican sandwiches shows. Street-style tacos and empanadas round things out.

The menu has a few fun detours as well. A Hot Dog Callejero, a Pollo Asado Plato, and fresh guacamole all make appearances, along with a full vegetarian menu.

This is a family-owned, counter-service spot with a clean and organized dining area. Orders come out quickly, and dogs are welcome at outside seating.

Timing matters most here. Torta Truck runs Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 8 PM and closes Sunday and Monday, so a Monday craving will have to wait.

Reservations are not taken, but delivery and catering are available. Street parking includes both free and metered spaces nearby.

4. North of the Border, Red Bank, NJ

Most taquerias are still dark at 6 AM, but North of the Border is already serving. That early start, plus late hours up to 11 PM, makes this petite Red Bank kitchen one of the most flexible torta stops in the state.

Two sandwiches deserve your attention. The Torta Cubana is a Cuban-style torta stacked with several fillings, and the Cemita Frontera brings the Puebla-style sandwich tradition to Monmouth Street.

Fun fact: a cemita is named for its sesame-topped roll, which sets it apart from the softer bread used for a classic torta.

The rest of the menu reads like a homestyle Mexican kitchen. Sopes, lengua quesadillas, huitlacoche, garlic shrimp, fried sweet plantains, and huevos rancheros for breakfast are all on offer.

Seating is limited and the room stays fairly quiet, so takeout and delivery are popular. On-site parking is a real bonus in downtown Red Bank.

Thursday nights are the busiest stretch, while Monday and Wednesday mornings tend to be calm. There is also a kids’ menu for younger eaters who are not ready for a full cemita.
