The first cold snap in Missouri changes what people crave almost overnight. Salads lose their appeal, and suddenly everyone wants a bowl of something thick, warm, and filling.
Chicken and dumplings sits at the top of that list for a lot of us, and a good bowl is easier to find than you might think if you know where to look. This list covers six Missouri restaurants where chicken and dumplings shows up on the menu or as a daily special, from a historic downtown Branson diner to a Southern cookhouse in Kansas City.
Some are small-town cafes along the highway, and one even tosses rolls across the dining room. Each stop has its own personality, its own hours, and its own reason to plan a trip.
Save this one for the next gray, chilly weekend when the soup pot at home just will not cut it.
1. Farmhouse Restaurant, Branson, MO

Downtown Branson has plenty of glitz out on the strip, but Main Street keeps things old-fashioned. Farmhouse Restaurant sits at 119 W Main St, right among the traditional storefronts of the historic district.
The menu reads like a country cooking checklist. Chicken and dumplings is a featured dish here, made with drop dumplings and paired well with the creamy mashed potatoes the kitchen is known for.
Beyond the dumplings, there is chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, catfish, country ham steak, and cobbler. Save room for the apple dumplings if you want a sweet twist on the theme.
Sweet tea comes by the quart, which tells you how seriously this place takes comfort. Doors open daily from 7 AM to 8 PM, so breakfast, lunch, or an early supper all work.
Reservations are not accepted, and Sunday mornings into the afternoon get crowded. If you want a quieter table, Tuesday or Thursday evenings are a smarter bet.
Prices run about $10 to $20 per person.
2. The Blue Owl Restaurant & Bakery, Kimmswick, MO

Kimmswick has fewer than 200 residents, yet people drive in from all over the St. Louis area. A big reason is The Blue Owl, famous for its Levee High Apple Pie.
Pie gets the headlines, but the savory side holds its own. Chicken and dumplings appears among the daily specials, along with fried chicken, steak and gravy, and meatloaf, and the portions are generous with tender chicken.
The regular menu covers soups, salads, sandwiches, and quiche. Quiche Lorraine, baked chicken salad pie, and gooey butter cheesecake are a few standouts.
I would plan this one as a half-day outing. The village has 19th-century brick-and-timber character and plenty of small shops to browse after lunch.
Keep the hours in mind, since The Blue Owl runs Tuesday through Sunday from 10 AM to 3 PM and closes Mondays. Reservations are accepted and recommended for brunch and lunch, especially on weekends.
3. Lambert’s Café, Ozark, MO

Keep your hands ready. At Lambert’s Cafe, raise one and a server will throw a hot, freshly baked roll your way, a tradition that earned the place its “throwed rolls” nickname.
The show is fun, but the food backs it up. Chicken and Dumplings is an official menu highlight, and the bowl has a well-balanced flavor that fits right in with the hearty Southern lineup.
Then come the pass-arounds. Servers bring free fried okra, black-eyed peas, fried potatoes, macaroni, and more to the table, so nobody leaves hungry.
Other picks include frog legs, BBQ pork steak, salmon patties, and center cut ham steak. Portions are large, and prices stay around $10 to $20.
The Ozark location sits on W State Hwy J just south of Springfield. Saturday afternoons and evenings pack in, while weekday mornings are calmer, and there is usually plenty of parking.
4. Rise N Dine Cafe, Monroe City, MO

Road trippers crossing northeast Missouri on US 24 and 36 should know about this stop in Monroe City. The small railroad town of about 2,500 has a cafe that takes soup seriously.
Rise N Dine Cafe is mainly known for breakfast and lunch, with omelets, loaded skillets, pancakes, waffles, French toast, sandwiches, and smash burgers. On chilly days, though, the chicken dumpling soup is the order to watch for.
It is rich and full of flavor, the kind of bowl that makes a cold drive feel a lot shorter.
Practical details make it even easier. There is a drive-through, so you can grab a meal without leaving the car, plus free parking for anyone who wants to sit down.
Hours run daily from 6 AM to 3 PM. Plan for a morning or midday visit, since the kitchen closes before dinner.
5. Gingham’s Homestyle Restaurant, St Charles, MO

Late-night dumpling cravings have a home in St. Charles. Gingham’s Homestyle Restaurant stays open 24 hours from Wednesday through Saturday, which is rare for a comfort food kitchen.
Chicken and dumplings shows up here as a soup of the day in the rotation. A nice trick is to order a dinner like fried chicken with mashed potatoes and upgrade a side to the soup.
The menu is long. Original Southern fried chicken, chicken and waffles, chicken Parmesan, and breakfast scramblers all share space with housemade desserts like coconut cream pie.
Since the soup changes, it helps to call ahead at 636-946-0266 if dumplings are the goal. Sunday afternoons and Friday through Saturday evenings bring the biggest crowds, and reservations are not taken.
Hours outside the 24-hour stretch run 6 AM to 9 PM on Sunday and Monday, and until 10 PM on Tuesday.
6. Lula Southern Cookhouse, Kansas City, MO

Kansas City is famous for barbecue, so a Southern cookhouse on Main Street might be a pleasant surprise. Lula Southern Cookhouse brings creative takes on classics to the downtown core.
The best way to eat here is to share. Chicken and dumplings pairs nicely with the signature biscuits, the award-winning gumbo, and a side of mac and cheese.
Other menu standouts include Southern fried chicken, blackened Delta catfish, chicken and waffle, collard greens, dirty rice, and fried green tomatoes. Apple crisp is a solid way to finish.
Expect slightly higher prices, around $20 to $40 per person. Reservations are recommended for brunch, lunch, and dinner, since there is usually a wait.
Lula is closed Mondays. It opens at 11 AM Tuesday through Friday, at 10 AM on weekends, and wraps up early on Sundays at 2 PM, so brunch is the Sunday play.
