New Jersey Cheese Lovers Should Make A Trip To These 6 Old-School Mozzarella Shops

Fresh mozzarella in New Jersey is not just a sandwich topping. It is a daily ritual at old-school Italian delis where the cheese is made in house and sold by the ball.

From Hoboken to the Jersey Shore, these six shops keep that tradition going with soft, milky mozz, hearty subs, and counters that still run on a classic deli rhythm. Grab a cooler bag and start planning your cheese run.

1. Fiore’s House of Quality, Hoboken, NJ

Roast beef and mozzarella might not sound like a famous pairing, but at Fiore’s it is the order people line up for. The shop on Adams Street is an old-school Hoboken deli built around fresh, house-made mozzarella made daily.

The Cold Roast Beef and Mozzarella Sandwich is the signature, and the Mortadella and Mozzarella Sandwich is a close second. There is also a fresh mozzarella sandwich with balsamic, roasted peppers, pickled eggplant, and artichoke for anyone skipping meat.

Plan accordingly. Fiore’s is counter service and takeout only, with no seating and no restroom, so think of it as a grab-and-go stop.

Hours run Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the shop is closed Sunday. Thursdays and Saturday afternoons tend to be busiest, while Monday and Tuesday are calmer.

Most sandwiches land in the $10 to $20 range.

2. Massimo Italian Deli, Kenilworth, NJ

Sandwiches bring people into Massimo Italian Deli, but the mozzarella is the real reason they come back. The cheese is made in house, and it shows up across the menu in subs built with good bread and flavorful oil.

The chicken cutlet sandwich is a standout, with thin cutlets, fresh mozzarella, roasted peppers, and balsamic vinegar. The counter also carries prosciutto, parmacotto, salami, and other Italian meats and cheeses to take home.

I would save this stop for a weekend morning. Massimo opens at 8 a.m.

Tuesday through Saturday and closes at 4 p.m., with shorter Sunday hours ending at 1 p.m. It is closed Mondays.

Free parking makes the Kenilworth Boulevard location easy. It is takeout only, so bring lunch to a nearby park or straight home.

3. Cosmo’s Italian Salumeria, Hackensack, NJ

Cash in your pocket is the first rule at Cosmo’s. This long-running Main Street salumeria in Hackensack keeps things old-fashioned, right down to the payment method and the retro look.

Fresh homemade mozzarella is made every day here. It goes into a simple menu of Italian subs, a Chicken Parm Hero, eggplant parm, roast beef with gravy, and porchetta.

Homemade soups, salads, and pasta dishes round things out, and prices stay friendly for the quality.

Weekday hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays are the busiest stretch, so a weekday visit is easier.

There is no restroom, but free parking options are nearby.

4. Sergio & Co Italian Specialties, Denville, NJ

Part deli, part Italian grocery, Sergio and Co is the stop for people who want more than a sandwich. The front of the Broadway storefront is stocked with imported Italian goods, and a large deli counter fills the back.

Fresh mozzarella sits alongside a wide range of imported cheeses and in-house prepared foods. The menu includes Caprese Salad, Prosciutto Bread, Meatballs, Chicken Francese, Antipasto La Fede, and Seafood Salad.

Rice balls are a favorite, and the house Italian baguette is baked fresh. Coffee is on offer too, which makes a morning stop tempting.

Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday afternoons and Saturdays get busy, so early weekdays are calmer.

Catering is available for parties, and parking is free.

5. Valente’s Italian Deli, Wall Township, NJ

Shore-area residents do not have to drive north for a real Italian deli. Valente’s on Belmar Boulevard brings that classic North Jersey style to Monmouth County.

Fresh wet mozzarella is made daily, and it anchors thick Italian subs and chicken cutlet sandwiches. Boar’s Head cold cuts and Bell and Evans chicken fill out the menu.

Valente’s is also a full market. There is a butcher shop, fresh rolls, Italian bread, baked goods, and prepared dinners for nights when cooking is off the table.

Early birds benefit most. The shop opens at 7 a.m. every day, closing at 6 p.m.

Monday through Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Sunday mornings are among the quietest times, and parking is free.

6. M & P Biancamano, Hoboken, NJ

In Hoboken, fresh mozzarella has a nickname, and at M and P Biancamano it is simply mutz. This family-owned Washington Street deli makes homemade mozzarella every day.

Sandwiches are huge, stacked high in the Dagwood style. Chicken cutlets, balsamic, and fresh mozz are the classic combination, and the macaroni salad is a popular side.

The menu also covers an Italian Hero with cold cuts and a Roast Beef Turkey Provolone. Plenty of former Hoboken residents return just to stock up on mozzarella.

Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and until 4 p.m. on Saturday, with Sundays closed. Parking is paid street parking on Washington Street, so a short walk from the PATH or a nearby spot is the smart move.

Six shops, six styles, one shared love of fresh mozzarella. Pick one close to home, then work your way across the state.
