Weekend mornings in California have a special kind of ritual, and for a lot of families it starts with a big bowl of menudo. This classic Mexican soup is rich, red, and hearty, and many kitchens only make it on Saturdays and Sundays because it takes so long to cook.
That makes finding a good bowl feel like a small weekend win. The seven spots on this list stretch from Los Angeles and San Diego up through Bakersfield, Fresno, Salinas, Sacramento, and the Bay Area.
Some are decades-old family cafes, some are birria specialists, and one even folds menudo into an all-you-can-eat buffet with multiple moles. Each one serves portions big enough to carry you well past lunch.
Save this list for the next weekend you wake up craving something warm, filling, and made the old-fashioned way. Just plan to go early, since menudo has a habit of running out.
1. El Tepeyac Cafe, Los Angeles, CA

Since 1955, this Boyle Heights cafe on Evergreen Avenue has been feeding Los Angeles with burritos so big they have their own reputation. It is family-run, modest in look, and still one of the most talked-about Mexican kitchens on the Eastside.
Menudo shows up Friday through Sunday, and it is served while it lasts. The Mini Menudo is a smart order if you also want room for a burrito, since even the smaller bowl is plenty for a lighter appetite.
And you will probably want that burrito. Manuel’s Special Burrito and the Hollenbeck Burrito are the famous ones, with the Carne Asada Burrito, Machaca Bowl, and Chile Relleno Burrito rounding out the lineup.
Chilaquiles are on the menu too for a classic breakfast plate.
Doors open at 6 AM every day, closing at 7 PM on weekdays and 8 PM on weekends. Sunday morning into the afternoon is the busiest stretch, and reservations are not taken, so a wait is normal.
Kids are welcome with high chairs and a kids’ menu, and there is outdoor seating if you bring the dog. Most meals land in the $10 to $20 range per person.
2. Ed Fernandez Restaurant Birrieria, San Diego, CA

Birria may be the name on the sign, but the weekend menudo here has quietly earned its own following. It is thick and rich, with tender tendon cooked just right, and it is served on Saturdays and Sundays.
The rest of the menu leans hard into birria. Think Quesabirria Tacos, Tostada De Birria, and the Quesataco Extremo, which is exactly as hearty as the name suggests.
Coffee is a bigger deal here than at most taco spots. Cafe de olla and cafe preparado are both on offer, along with iced coffee and agua fresca for something cool.
The dining room is simple, clean, and dressed up with colorful seating. Hours run Wednesday through Sunday from 6 AM to 2 PM, and the place is closed Monday and Tuesday.
Weekend mornings bring the biggest crowds, so an early arrival helps. Free parking and a $10 to $20 price range make it an easy breakfast plan in the Otay Mesa area.
3. Los Moles, Emeryville, CA

Seven kinds of mole on one buffet line is a pretty strong opening argument. Los Moles in Emeryville turns weekends into an all-you-can-eat spread, and menudo is part of the deal.
Alongside the moles, the buffet includes pozole, menudo, birria, beans, and fresh cut fruit. Tortillas are made fresh right in front of you, which is a nice touch when you are going back for round two.
The weekend buffet runs through lunch until at least 3 PM. Brunch reservations are recommended, and the restaurant does accept them, which takes some guesswork out of a Sunday visit.
Save room for the flan if you can. Cafe de olla and horchata are good non-buffet picks, and the menu has full vegetarian and vegan options too.
Weekday visits have their own perk with Taco Tuesday, when unlimited tacos, beans, chips, and salsa run $19. Hours are 11 AM to 9 PM on weekdays, 10 AM to 9 PM Saturday, and 10 AM to 8 PM Sunday.
4. Los Molcajetes, Bakersfield, CA

Bakersfield takes its Mexican food seriously, and Los Molcajetes on Brundage Lane is a steady weekend favorite for anyone chasing menudo and pozole.
The bowls of menudo come out looking impressive, and they tend to sell out on busy weekends. If soup is the whole reason for the trip, earlier is better.
The namesake dish is the molcajete, served in a stone bowl. The Molcajete Supremo is the big option, and there is even a vegan version, plus Chile Verde Enchiladas for a vegetarian plate.
Portions run large here, and the dining room is clean and modern. Live mariachi music adds a festive note, which makes it a fun pick for a family meal.
A kids’ menu and high chairs help with little ones, and reservations are accepted. Hours run mostly 10 AM to 9 PM, with later 10 PM closings on Friday and Saturday and an 8 PM close on Sunday.
5. Lalo’s Restaurant, Sacramento, CA

Weekend menudo is only half the story at this informal spot on 24th Street. Lalo’s is also known for lamb barbacoa specials, often served with blue corn tortillas, and pairing the two makes for a serious feast.
The menu lists a Pound of Barbacoa and a Barbacoa and Consome plate, which tells you a lot about how families order here. Bring a group and share.
Lalo’s also leans into Mexican dishes you do not see everywhere. Pancita, flautas, tamales, and a quesadilla with epazote and huitlacoche all sit on the menu, along with a loaded molcajete of chicken, beef, chorizo, cactus, onion, cheese, and salsa.
Weekend hours start early, at 8 AM Saturday and 7 AM Sunday. Sunday wraps up at 3 PM, so do not plan a late lunch.
Reservations are accepted, parking is free, and most meals stay between $10 and $20 per person.
6. Los Gallos Taqueria, Fresno, CA

Birria ramen on the same weekend menu as menudo and pozole is a lineup that gets people out of bed. Los Gallos Taqueria on West Figarden Drive brings all three together on Saturdays and Sundays.
Breakfast is a big draw, with home-style plates and cinnamon coffee. A salsa bar with homemade salsas and pickles lets you dress up your bowl however you like.
Outside of soup, the Giant Quesadilla lives up to its name. Asada Fries, Taco Campechano, Chile Verde, and quesabirria tacos are other filling picks, and the mixed shrimp cocktail has a loyal crowd.
Service moves quickly, and the dining room stays clean and relaxed. Free Wi-Fi is a small bonus if you linger over coffee.
Weekend hours begin at 7 AM, with Sunday closing at 5 PM. Reservations, a kids’ menu, and plenty of free parking make it an easy family stop.
7. Taqueria El Chavinda, Salinas, CA

Homemade tortillas turn a good bowl of menudo into a great one, and Taqueria El Chavinda serves both every Saturday and Sunday morning in east Salinas.
The weekend menudo has a strong reputation around town. Tear a warm tortilla, dip it in, and you have the classic breakfast many Salinas families grew up on.
Tacos are the other reason to come. Carne asada and chorizo tacos are popular, along with dorado tacos and the house chavindecas, plus tortas and burritos for bigger appetites.
Tacos here are easy to keep ordering, so a second round is common. Prices stay friendly, generally $10 to $20 per person.
The kitchen is open 9 AM to 10 PM every day. Sunday morning into the afternoon is the busiest time, and there is free parking on site.
That wraps up the list. From a 1955 Eastside cafe to a mole buffet in the Bay Area, each of these kitchens proves that a weekend bowl of menudo is still one of California’s most satisfying traditions.
