Few breakfasts in Ohio pull people out of bed quite like biscuits smothered in sausage gravy. It is simple food, but every small-town kitchen seems to make it a little differently.
Some spots lean on scratch-made biscuits, some on a gravy with its own special flavor, and a couple serve it Amish-style from a buffet line. These seven country kitchens, from the hills near Athens to the farm towns near Columbus and Dayton, are where that plate gets the respect it deserves.
1. GiGi’s Country Kitchen, The Plains, OH

Grandma-style biscuits and gravy are the reason plenty of folks in The Plains start their weekend here. The plate is simple on purpose, and that is the point.
GiGi’s Country Kitchen sits at 105 N Plains Rd, just up the road from Athens. The menu sticks to hearty breakfast classics, with omelets, a breakfast bowl, and corned beef hash sharing space with that headline gravy.
The room is casual and quiet, and service moves quickly. Coffee gets real attention here too, which matters when you are lingering over a second biscuit.
Hours run Tuesday through Sunday from 8 AM to 2 PM, and it is closed Mondays. Saturday and Sunday mornings draw the biggest crowds, so a weekday visit is the easier play.
Families will find high chairs and a kids’ menu. Parking is free, with a lot and street spaces nearby.
2. Tammy’s Country Kitchen, Nelsonville, OH

Plan ahead for this one, because Tammy’s keeps a weekday schedule. The kitchen opens Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 6:45 PM and stays closed on weekends.
That small hurdle is worth clearing. The biscuits are made from scratch, and the sausage gravy has a flavor that sets it apart from the usual peppery version, all at a friendly price.
You will find it at 1333 E Canal St in Nelsonville, a handy stop for anyone heading into the Hocking Hills region. The place has a strong senior following and a homey, small-town pace.
Save room if you can. The bread pudding and peanut butter pie are two of the reasons people come back after lunch, and chili cheese fries round out the comfort food side.
Reservations are not accepted, but free parking is easy to find.
3. Country Kitchen Restaurant, Lebanon, OH

Breakfast at dinnertime is fair game here. Country Kitchen Restaurant on OH-350 serves its morning menu all day, every day from 7 AM to 8 PM.
That means a sausage biscuit with hot gravy can show up next to country fried steak and eggs whenever the craving hits. The Country Boy Breakfast and the Montana Ranch Omelette are two other big plates worth a look.
A small detail I appreciate is the homemade jam, which gives the biscuits a sweet option alongside the gravy. Portions are generous and prices stay fair.
Regulars fill the booths, which gives the place a true small-town feel just outside Lebanon. It is an easy detour for anyone exploring Warren County.
Walk-ins only, with a free lot out front.
4. Loretta’s Country Kitchen, Christiansburg, OH

Christiansburg is the kind of Champaign County village you could pass through in a minute. Slow down at 12 E Pike St, though, because Loretta’s has earned a reputation for some of the best biscuits and gravy in the area.
The restaurant is small, relaxed, and run by a friendly staff. Breakfast is served all day, and daily specials keep the regulars guessing.
Pie is the other draw. Peanut butter pie is a standout, and the dessert case gives a second reason to stay put.
Hours shift through the week. It opens at 8 AM Monday through Saturday, closing at 2 PM on Mondays and Saturdays and at 8 PM Tuesday through Friday, with Sundays off.
Unlike most spots on this list, Loretta’s accepts reservations, which is handy for a Friday evening group.
5. Granny’s Kitchen, Galion, OH

Nobody leaves Granny’s Kitchen hungry. The biscuits and gravy come in hearty portions, and you can order a single biscuit and gravy if you want room for pancakes too.
The menu at 940 Charles St in Galion reads like a home-cooking greatest hits list. Fluffy pancakes, corned beef hash, home fries with gravy, and the Everything Omelet cover breakfast.
Later in the day, meatloaf, fish and fries, and liver and onions take over. Homemade French fries and bacon fries are popular sides.
Doors open at 7 AM daily. It closes at 6:45 PM Monday through Saturday and at 2 PM on Sunday.
Weekend mornings get busy, while weekday afternoons are calmer. Curbside pickup is available if you would rather eat at home.
6. Des Dutch Essenhaus, Shreve, OH

Shreve sits on the edge of Ohio’s Amish Country, and Des Dutch Essenhaus brings that Amish-style cooking to its morning table. The biscuits are soft and pair with a sausage gravy that has a loyal following.
Breakfast plates add eggs and thick bacon, and cinnamon rolls make a fine sweet side. Homemade pies and broasted chicken take center stage later in the day.
The building at 176 N Market St has a historic feel, complete with a fireplace. A salad bar and a private dining room are also available.
Timing matters here. It opens at 9 AM Tuesday through Friday and 8 AM on Saturday, while Sunday runs 11 AM to 2 PM and Monday is closed.
Saturday morning is the busiest stretch, and reservations are accepted.
7. Der Dutchman, Plain City, OH

A breakfast buffet changes the biscuits and gravy math. At Der Dutchman, you can go back for seconds alongside fluffy scrambled eggs and hash browns.
The Plain City dining room at 445 Jefferson Ave is big and straightforward, built for families and groups northwest of Columbus. The gravy is rich and comforting, made in a classic country style rather than a spicy one.
Lunch and dinner bring Amish favorites such as roast beef, pot pie, noodles over mashed potatoes, and Meatloaf Manhattan. A salad bar and a dessert lineup round things out.
Hours are Monday through Saturday, 7 AM to 8 PM, and it is closed Sundays. Weekday mornings are the quietest window for a relaxed breakfast.
Free Wi-Fi, a kids’ menu, and changing tables make it an easy family stop.
