Old-School Steakhouse Fans Keep Returning To These 6 New Jersey Dining Rooms For Steaks

Some people want a trendy spot with tiny plates and a loud playlist. Steakhouse fans usually want something else.

They want a thick cut cooked right, a side of creamed spinach, a server who knows the menu cold, and a dining room that looks like it has seen a few decades of birthdays and business dinners. New Jersey happens to be very good at this.

From a Hudson River chophouse to a 19th-century saloon in Hoboken, a brownstone in Jersey City, and a Bergen County room known for dry-aged beef, the state has plenty of places where the classic steakhouse still rules. The six below each bring something different to the table, whether that is live piano, a porterhouse built for two, or a fireplace and jazz on a busy Saturday.

Save this list for your next celebration, or send it to the friend who always orders the ribeye.

1. The River Palm Terrace, Edgewater, NJ

Few steakhouses in the state can say they sit right off River Road with the Hudson waterfront nearby. The River Palm Terrace makes that location part of the appeal, pairing a polished chophouse menu with outdoor seating and valet parking.

The signature order here is the Executive Cut N Y Shell Steak. Round it out with classic creamed spinach, Maryland crab cakes, or grilled octopus.

What surprises first-timers is how wide the menu runs. Sushi rolls and a crispy rice appetizer share space with steaks, pasta, and seafood, and the Love Boat for Two is built for couples who cannot pick just one thing.

I like this one because it works for more than a big night out. The doors open at 11:30 AM daily, so lunch is on the table, and there is a kids’ menu too.

Plan ahead, though. Reservations are recommended for both lunch and dinner, and weekend evenings and Sunday afternoons tend to fill up fast.

Finish with the cheesecake, which has a strong following of its own.

2. Edward’s Steakhouse, Jersey City, NJ

A 19th-century brownstone on Marin Boulevard is not where most people expect to find a dry-aged steak. That is exactly what makes Edward’s Steakhouse so easy to love.

The room is small, dark, and romantic in a way that feels true to the old-school playbook. It is the kind of place I would save for an anniversary or a quiet holiday dinner with friends.

The dry-aged beef is the headliner, with a crusty edge and a tender center. Beyond steak, the menu covers classics like Oysters Rockefeller, escargot bourguignon, fried calamari, and a veal chop.

There is even chicken parmesan for anyone in the group who skips beef. Asparagus gratin and mushrooms make solid sides.

Dinner starts at 4 PM every day, closing at 10 PM Monday through Saturday and 9 PM on Sunday. Friday and Saturday evenings are the busiest, so book ahead, and ask about the private dining room if you are hosting a group.

3. Dino & Harry’s Steakhouse, Hoboken, NJ

Hoboken restaurants open and close all the time, but Dino & Harry’s has held its corner on 14th Street for decades. Walk in and you will see why it sticks.

The steakhouse lives inside a 19th-century saloon, complete with stained glass and a tin ceiling. Add live piano music and the whole place looks ready for a movie scene.

For the table, the Porterhouse Steak for 2 is the power move. Ribeye fans are well covered too, and the lamb chops and Oysters Maxwell give non-steak eaters real options.

Do not overlook the sides. The creamed corn brulee and gnocchi get plenty of attention, and the bacon appetizer is a classic starter.

Dinner runs 5 to 10 PM Monday through Saturday and 4 to 9 PM on Sunday. Thursday through Saturday evenings get crowded, so reserve early and budget time for street or garage parking in this busy mile-square city.

4. Roots Steakhouse, Summit, NJ

Dark wood, leather booths, and low lighting. If that is your picture of a proper steakhouse, the Summit location of Roots checks every box.

Roots has several locations around New Jersey, but this one on Springfield Avenue stands out for its dining room. It sits right in the heart of downtown Summit, which makes it an easy pick before or after a stroll through town.

Start with the French onion soup or lobster bisque. Then go for a steak with potatoes au gratin, creamed spinach, or onion rings on the side.

Here is a practical bonus: Roots serves lunch and brunch, not just dinner. It opens at 11:30 AM daily and stays open until 11 PM on Friday and Saturday.

There is also a full vegetarian menu and a private dining room. Saturday evenings are the busiest, so a weekday lunch is a smart way to enjoy the room with less of a crowd.

5. Steakhouse 85 Restaurant, New Brunswick, NJ

Lit-up menus are not something you see at most steakhouses. At Steakhouse 85, they are just one of the quirks that set this Central Jersey favorite apart.

Located on Church Street in downtown New Brunswick, the restaurant mixes old-school service with live jazz on some nights and a fireplace in the dining room. It works for a business dinner as easily as a date night.

The Dry Aged Delmonico is the steak to know. The Cowboy Ribeye is another big draw, and a blue cheese sauce makes a strong partner for either one.

Fresh oysters on ice and crispy calamari cover the starters. For dessert, the amaretto creme brulee is a fitting finish.

Hours run 4 to 9 PM Monday through Thursday, until 10:30 PM on Friday and Saturday, and until 8 PM on Sunday. Saturday night is peak time, so reserve ahead and plan on a garage or lot for parking.

6. The Park Steakhouse, Park Ridge, NJ

Calling it a steakhouse almost sells it short. The Park Steakhouse in Park Ridge is a true chophouse, with braised short ribs, pork chops, and fish sharing the menu with dry-aged beef.

Still, the steaks are the reason Bergen County diners keep coming back. The porterhouse, filet mignon, and bone-in ribeye all have loyal fans.

Start with a wedge salad loaded with thick bacon, tomatoes, and sharp cheese. Roasted oysters, grilled octopus, and sizzling scallops are also strong opening moves.

The dining room leans quiet and elegant, which makes conversation easy. Save room for the ricotta cheesecake.

Timing matters here. The restaurant is closed on Mondays and open Tuesday through Sunday from 4 to 9 PM, with Saturday evening the busiest stretch.

A free lot and valet parking take the stress out of arrival, and reservations for dinner are a smart idea.
