People Keep Coming Back To This Beloved Downtown Augusta, Georgia Mexican Spot For Its Massive Nachos

Some plates of food are so big you have to laugh when they hit the table. At Nacho Mama’s on Broad Street in downtown Augusta, that happens all day long.

With a 4.5-star rating from more than 2,500 reviews, this funky little Mexican spot has turned piles of chips, cheese, and toppings into a local habit. I wanted to see why so many folks keep walking back through its doors.

Picture a busy stretch of Broad Street, then picture a small storefront that looks almost too humble to be famous. That is Nacho Mama’s, sitting at 976 Broad St in the heart of downtown Augusta, Georgia.

Google lists it as a Mexican restaurant, and its own description calls it a casual hangout for burritos and margaritas. Burritos may headline the menu, but the nachos are what kept popping up in conversations I had and reviews I read.

One visitor put it nicely, saying it might look like a hole in the wall from outside but feels just plain cool once you step in. I agree with that first impression completely.

The outside keeps things modest, and the inside does all the talking.

The spot also lands right in the middle of the action. Regulars point out that it sits near everything fun downtown, which makes it a natural first or last stop on a Broad Street outing.

If you are wandering the area and your stomach starts grumbling, you will not have to go far.

Twenty years. That is how long one happy customer says they have been eating at Nacho Mama’s, and they claim they have never had a bad meal or experience in all that time.

Loyalty like that does not happen by accident. Reviewers call the place a downtown staple and a local favorite, and you can feel that hometown pride when you walk in.

Friends recommend it to visitors, and visitors leave planning their next trip.

I loved hearing about the travelers too. One couple came in town for a wedding and stopped for lunch.

Another group came by a couple of days after a hurricane had passed through, just hoping to find somewhere open, and they were thrilled to see the doors unlocked and the kitchen running.

There is also a nice bit of recognition floating around. One diner mentioned spotting a Best Burrito in Augusta award for 2025 on display.

Awards are fun, but the real proof is in all those repeat customers who treat this place like a second kitchen.

Nachos That Swallow the Plate

Fair warning: you will not see the edge of your plate. One first-timer said exactly that about her nachos, adding that the pile was way more than one person normally eats.

Size is the headline here. Order a plate and you get a mountain of chips buried under cheese and toppings, easily big enough to split.

Several reviewers suggested sharing, and after seeing one, I think that is smart advice unless you skipped breakfast and lunch.

The named nachos have their own fan clubs. Step Daddy nachos come up again and again as a favorite, with one group ordering two plates at once.

Another diner raved about the Sunburn nachos, describing them as sweet and stacked with toppings.

Not every opinion is glowing, and I want to be honest about that. A few critics felt the chips tasted like they came from a bag, and one person thought the portions were simply too large.

Still, for most people, that over-the-top pile is exactly the reason they come back.

Mahi Mahi and Seafood Surprises

Here is something I did not expect from a nacho joint: fish is the most talked-about item. Mahi mahi shows up in more than 30 review mentions, beating out every other topic.

One husband ordered the mahi mahi nachos and his wife called them scrumptious. She described a good amount of fish under tons of cheese, olives, and sauce.

That kind of combo sounds odd at first, then makes perfect sense once you think about fish tacos.

Shrimp lovers have options too. The Havana burrito got praise for not skimping on the shrimp or the toppings packed inside.

Another table ordered the Backyard salad with shrimp added, so seafood can sneak into almost anything.

If you usually stick with beef or chicken, consider this your nudge to branch out. The mahi might be the dish you end up bragging about to friends later.

Burritos Big Enough to Earn Awards

Burritos are technically the star of the show, according to the restaurant’s own description. After reading about them, I understood why.

The Godfather burrito gets a lot of love, with one visitor saying it deserved that Best Burrito in Augusta award. The Baja burrito won over a husband described as extremely picky, which might be the highest praise of all.

The Havana, loaded with shrimp, is another crowd favorite.

Shredded beef comes up often too, with 15 mentions. One diner noted the kitchen uses shredded beef rather than steak, and said that was perfectly fine.

Not everyone agrees on flavor. A couple of reviewers found their burritos bland or felt the salsa tasted store-bought, and one longtime visitor said she keeps hoping for more spice.

My take: ask for extra sauces on the side and season to your liking.

Tacos, Salsas, and a Salad with a Silly Name

Let me introduce you to the Seizure salad. Yes, that is the real name, and one regular calls it her favorite thing on the menu, a huge bowl served with a jalapeño vinaigrette that ties everything together.

Tacos hold their own here as well. Pulled pork tacos earn plenty of mentions, and a simple beef taco on a flour tortilla was called excellent.

Chicken and potato tacos also got a big thumbs up.

Then there is the salsa situation. Mango habanero salsa gets talked about often, bringing a sweet and spicy kick.

One fan also loves a locally made peri peri sauce from DiChickO’s that pairs well with tacos and burritos.

Cheese dip and chips round things out as a popular starter. Guacamole gets compliments too, with one family saying everyone at the table loved it.

Plant-Based Choices Done Right

Eating plant-based at a nacho spot can feel like a gamble. Good news: at Nacho Mama’s, veggie fans seem genuinely happy.

One regular gushed about the Garden burrito, ordering it with no dairy, no mushrooms, and extra zucchini and potatoes. She said the staff is always accommodating and kind about her changes.

She also likes the spinach and potato tacos.

A zucchini quesadilla impressed another diner so much that they called it the best quesadilla they had ever eaten. They even sent compliments to the progressive chefs.

Substitutions seem easy across the board. One visiting group mentioned the cashier happily swapped items for them.

If you have food preferences, just speak up at the counter.

Margaritas and the Self-Serve Drink Station

Festive margaritas are part of the official pitch, and regulars back that up. One fan said the margaritas always come with a good pour.

There is a bar for quick meals too. A twenty-year customer described sitting at the bar on a Saturday afternoon and having three people setting food and drinks in front of them in under a minute.

That is fast.

Not drinking alcohol? A self-serve drink station lets you refill at your own pace, which one longtime visitor said she loves.

Pair a margarita with a pile of nachos and you basically have the signature Nacho Mama’s experience.

Hipster Vibes, Art, and a Pool Table Upstairs

Walk inside and the hipster vibe hits you right away, as one visitor happily pointed out. Cool paintings hang on the walls, and some of them are actually for sale.

Space is surprisingly generous for such a narrow storefront. There is plenty of seating, plus a second floor with bar seats.

A pool table up there gets lots of mentions, so you can play a round while waiting for your food to settle.

Some seats even offer views of the town, and there is outdoor seating for nice days. Music plays in the background, and several guests called the atmosphere great.

It suits a wide crowd. Families mention grandkids loving it, couples drop in for date nights, and friends come for drinks and games.

One first-timer also noted the place was very clean.

Counter Service, Hours, and What You Will Spend

Ordering works at the counter. You place your order, grab your food when it is ready, and settle in wherever you like.

Staff get a lot of shoutouts for being friendly and quick, and one regular named Shannon as especially attentive. Food tends to come out fast, according to many diners.

Prices run about $10 to $20 per person. Many call it affordable, though one critic paid $19.49 for nachos and thought that was steep.

That same reviewer disliked that checkout defaults to a large tip for counter service, so check the screen before tapping.

Monday is lunch only, 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Call +1 706-724-0501 or visit nachomamasaugusta.com for details.

My Honest Take on Nacho Mama’s

So, is it worth the hype? For most people, the answer seems to be a happy yes.

A 4.5-star average across thousands of reviews says a lot. People love the giant portions, the friendly crew, the quirky space, and the easy downtown location.

Mahi mahi nachos, Step Daddy nachos, and the Godfather burrito are great places to start.

It will not win over everyone. A handful of diners find the flavors mild or the chips too ordinary.

If you crave bold heat, grab extra salsa or that mango habanero.

My advice is to come hungry, bring a friend to share, and maybe challenge someone to pool upstairs. I have a feeling you will end up like so many others, already planning your next visit.
