Seven Ohio Drive-Ins Still Carhop Burgers To Your Window

Remember when dinner showed up on a tray hooked right onto your car window? In Ohio, that habit never fully went away.

A handful of old-school drive-ins still send carhops out to the parking lot with burgers, coneys, onion rings, and frosty root beer. Some of these stands date back generations, while others keep the tradition rolling with their own signature sandwiches and homemade drinks.

This list covers seven of them, stretching from Akron down to Portsmouth and over to Hamilton. Each one earns its spot with something specific, whether that is a famous double-decker burger, a Sunday float deal, or a menu built around footlong chili dogs.

Many are cash-friendly, casual, and easy on the wallet. So roll down the window, check the hours before you go, and plan a road trip that ends with a tray of food parked right on your door.

1. Woody’s Drive In, Fremont, OH

Footlong chili dogs get top billing at plenty of Ohio stands, but Woody’s in Fremont backs them up with a whole lineup of coneys and sloppy dogs. Add a burger, a scoop of creamy coleslaw, and a homemade root beer, and you have the classic order here.

The carhops bring everything out and hang it right on your window on a tray. Floats are another popular pick, especially on warm evenings.

Bring cash, because this is a cash-only operation. Prices generally land in the $10 to $20 per person range.

Picnic tables give families a spot to spread out if the car gets crowded. Dogs are welcome outside, and a kids’ menu keeps younger diners covered.

Woody’s sits at 1630 E State St and opens daily from 11 AM to 7 PM. Sunday afternoons tend to be the busiest stretch, so a weekday lunch is the easier play.

2. Stewart’s Root Beer Drive In, Marion, OH

Here is a name with real roots. The Stewart’s brand dates back to 1924, and the Marion location keeps that old-time drive-in setup alive on N Main St.

You pull in, order through a speaker box at your car, and a carhop brings the food out on a tray that hooks onto your door or window. It is about as 1950s as lunch gets.

The Garbage Burger is the sandwich to know, and the pork tenderloin has its own following. A root beer float rounds out the meal nicely.

Prices stay low, which makes it easy to feed a carload without much fuss.

Plan around the schedule. Stewart’s is open 11 AM to 7 PM most days, closes early at 2:30 PM on Tuesdays, and stays closed on Sundays.

There are no restrooms on site, so I would factor that into a longer road trip.

3. The Root Beer Stande, Dayton, OH

Sunday is float day at The Root Beer Stande. The Dayton drive-in offers $1.50 floats on Sundays, made with its own housemade root beer.

Order a classic float and it arrives in a frosted glass, with the tray attaching right to the side of your car. Prefer to eat elsewhere?

Everything can go to-go, too.

The menu covers burgers, hot dogs, fries, and onion rings, plus a few extras that stand out. Fried cauliflower is an unusual find at a drive-in, and the Windy City Dog adds a Chicago-style option.

Shakes and ice cream fill out the dessert side.

This is a seasonal stand at 1727 Woodman Dr, so check before heading over. Regular hours run Wednesday through Saturday 11 AM to 8 PM and Sunday noon to 8 PM, with Monday and Tuesday off.

4. Jolly’s Drive-In (East), Hamilton, OH

Chili-topped red hots are the calling card in Hamilton. Jolly’s has built a long run as a seasonal stand known for those dogs, plus cheeseburgers and homemade root beer in frosty mugs.

Carhops handle the deliveries, bringing orders straight to your vehicle. The menu sticks to drive-in basics: hamburgers, onion rings, fries, footlongs, chili cheese fries, and even popcorn.

Here is the budget-friendly pick of the bunch. Most meals fall in the $1 to $10 per person range, which is rare these days.

Jolly’s also has the latest hours on the southern end of this list, open daily from 11 AM to 9 PM. Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons draw the biggest crowds.

Find it at 210 N Erie Blvd Hwy. A drive-through is available if you are in a hurry, but the carhop route is half the fun.

5. Porky’s Drive In, Mansfield, OH

Pizza burgers are not something you see on every drive-in menu. Porky’s in Mansfield serves them alongside double cheeseburgers and fresh cut fries, giving this small stand a menu with a bit of personality.

The place has a quirky, longtime feel and is about as authentic an old-school drive-in as you will find. Carhops bring orders out, and homemade root beer is part of the draw.

Hot dog coneys and milkshakes are also on the board.

Early risers get a bonus. Porky’s opens at 10:30 AM Tuesday through Saturday, and breakfast and coffee are part of the lineup.

Hours vary by day, with an early 5 PM close on Mondays and no service on Sundays. You will find it at 811 Ashland Rd, with free parking right on site.

6. Jim Dandy Drive In, Portsmouth, OH

Ask around Portsmouth about Jim Dandy and you will likely hear two words: Big Mo. The double-decker burger comes with tartar sauce, lettuce, and pickles, and it has a long-running reputation in the tri-state area.

The famous deal is a Big Mo and a Coke, offered for around $3. That price alone makes the trip tempting.

Onion rings pair well with the burger, and shakes are a popular finish. The servers take your order and carry it right to your car.

Jim Dandy is a tiny spot with a cozy diner side, too. It opens at 9 AM Monday through Saturday and serves breakfast along with coffee and dessert.

Sundays are off, and weekday mornings and afternoons can get busy. The stand sits at 2348 Gallia St.

7. Swensons Drive-In, Akron, OH

Night owls, this one is yours. Swensons on E Cuyahoga Falls Ave stays open until 1 AM most nights and 1:30 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.

Carhops hustle orders out quickly and hang the tray from your car window. The Galley Boy and the Cheeseburg are the signature burgers Akron knows best.

Jalapeño stuffed teasers bring some heat to the side menu. Onion rings, fried mushrooms, and coney dogs fill out the fryer section.

For dessert, the Swensons Whip and milkshakes keep things sweet.

The crowd here mixes college students, families, and travelers, and dogs are welcome outside. Friday nights and Saturday afternoons run busiest, so a weeknight visit tends to move faster.

It is a fitting final stop, proof that Ohio still loves dinner served at the car door. Pick a stand, bring an appetite, and maybe some cash.
