Six Arizona Truck Stops And Roadside Grills That Still Cook Real Chicken-Fried Steak For Travelers

Arizona highways are long, and a good plate of chicken-fried steak can turn a tired drive into a happy one. Some old roadside spots still pound, bread, and fry this country classic the way travelers remember it, with gravy on top and big sides next to it.

From a Tucson truck terminal to Route 66 towns and a river city on the California line, these six stops keep the tradition going. Save this list before your next road trip, because a hungry stomach and an empty stretch of desert make a bad team.

1. Omar’s Hi-Way Chef Restaurant, Tucson, AZ

Truckers figured out this one long before road-trip bloggers did. Omar’s sits right inside the Tucson Truck Terminal, off I-10 at the Craycroft Road exit, number 268.

The menu leans hard into home-style comfort food. Chicken-fried steak shows up with a balanced coat of breading that does not bury the meat, and it shares the board with biscuits and gravy, meatloaf, pork chops, and even liver and onions.

There is also Mexican food and daily specials, which helps if someone in the car is not in a gravy mood. Save room for the deep-dish apple pie.

Hours run 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, with breakfast served all day. Weekend mornings get busy, while weeknights tend to be quiet.

Plates usually land in the $10 to $20 range per person. Parking is plentiful, which matters when half the lot is full of big rigs.

2. Westside Lilo’s Cafe, Seligman, AZ

Seligman has fewer than 1,000 residents, yet Route 66 travelers keep it busy all year. Westside Lilo’s is one of the reasons people stop instead of just snapping photos and leaving.

The walls are packed with knickknacks, and the plates are just as full. The Signature Country Fried Steak comes with homemade mashed potatoes, and you can also order it with eggs for a classic breakfast.

Burgers and a roast beef melt come with fresh-cut fries. Dessert fans should know the carrot cake is a house favorite.

I like this stop for its easy pace. The cafe is open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, does not take reservations, and has outdoor seating where dogs are welcome.

A vegan menu is also available, a nice surprise in a small highway town.

3. Rock Springs Café, Black Canyon City, AZ

Pie gets top billing here, but the chicken-fried steak deserves its own fan club. The steak is tender, the crust is crispy, and the gravy comes thick.

Rock Springs Café sits on the Old Black Canyon Highway, right off I-17 between Phoenix and the high country. It is a rural town of about 2,500 people, and the café works as a true desert pit stop.

The historic dining room has a fireplace and mountain views. Out back, a garden with a natural stone staircase leads down toward the springs that gave the place its name.

Curious eaters can try the calf fries. Breakfast brings plate-sized pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and homemade grits.

Before leaving, check the gift shop for homemade salsa and fruit butters, then grab a pie like the Cherry Crumb. Hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and dogs are allowed.

4. Crossroads Cafe, Parker, AZ

Bring a ruler, or at least a big appetite. The chicken-fried steak breakfast at Crossroads Cafe comes on an oblong plate about a foot long.

Parker is a Colorado River town of roughly 3,400 people near the California line, and this family diner on California Avenue feeds river visitors and highway drivers alike. Staff often point newcomers toward the chicken-fried steak as a local favorite.

Smoked ham and well-cooked steaks round out the menu. Breakfast is served all day.

Hours need a quick check before you go. The cafe opens at 6 a.m. daily but closes at 2:30 p.m.

Tuesday through Thursday, staying open into the evening the rest of the week.

Curbside pickup is an option, and reservations are accepted.

5. Mike & Ronda’s The Place Restaurant East, Flagstaff, AZ

Early risers, this one is yours. Doors open at 5 a.m.

Monday through Saturday, so you can eat before the sun clears the pines.

The diner sits on Historic Route 66 on Flagstaff’s east side. The setting is simple, and the focus stays on country cooking.

The chicken-fried steak platter is big enough to turn into leftovers. Pair it with the fluffy buttermilk biscuits and white sausage gravy, or go with pancakes or an omelet.

Sunday hours are shorter, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Weekend mornings fill up, and there are no reservations, so plan a little extra time.

6. The Northern Pines Restaurant, Flagstaff, AZ

Gluten-free travelers rarely get to enjoy a plate of country fried steak on the road. The Northern Pines makes that easier, with clearly marked gluten-free options and a dedicated grill.

The restaurant sits on East Butler Avenue near I-40 Exit 198, close to Flagstaff’s truck and travel stops. Inside, a fireplace and rustic decor set a relaxed mood.

Chicken-fried steak shares the menu with homemade meatloaf, a brisket melt, and a full vegetarian menu. The kitchen pays close attention to ingredients and small details.

Hours run 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, and reservations are accepted. There is outdoor seating where dogs are welcome.

That makes it a smart final stop before a long drive east or west on I-40.
