Skip The Chains And Grab A Coney At These 4 Old Indiana Hot Dog Counters

Indiana has a coney dog habit, and it runs deeper than most people realize. In Fort Wayne and Kokomo, small independent counters have been ladling meat sauce over hot dogs for generations, long before drive-thru menus took over every highway exit.

These spots are simple, cheap, and proudly local. Some have kept the same sauce recipe for more than a century, while others sell their own twists you will not find anywhere else.

If you are tired of eating the same fast food in every town, this list is your excuse to try something with real roots. Here are four old-school Indiana hot dog counters where the coney is still the star of the show.

1. Fort Wayne’s Famous Coney Island, Fort Wayne, IN

Back in 1914, this downtown Fort Wayne counter started serving coney dogs, and it has kept going ever since. That makes it one of the oldest hot dog stops in the state.

The coney sauce follows the same recipe it has used for more than a hundred years. Order the Coney Island Hot Dog with Everything, then grab a glass bottle of Coke to go with it.

A seat at the counter is the classic move here. The menu also covers burgers, chili, oven baked beans, and pie, with prices that stay friendly.

You will find it at 131 W Main St. Hours run 9 AM to 9 PM Monday through Thursday, until 10 PM on Friday and Saturday, and until 8 PM on Sunday.

Parking downtown can be tricky, so give yourself a few extra minutes. Weekend afternoons and Friday evenings get busy, while weekday mornings tend to be calmer.

2. Louie’s Coney Island, Kokomo, IN

Picture a hamburger shaped like a hot dog, baked, and covered in coney sauce. In Kokomo, that creation is called a Bake, and Louie’s is the place best known for it.

The family-owned spot on E Hoffer St still serves plenty of classic coney dogs too. The menu stretches to fried pickle spears, a filling gyro, and feta fries.

The setting leans old-school diner, with counter seating and a casual pace. It also offers a drive-through when you are short on time.

Plan around the schedule, since Louie’s is closed Sunday and Monday. It opens 9 AM to 6 PM Tuesday through Friday and 9 AM to 4 PM on Saturday.

Breakfast is served too, along with coffee and a kids’ menu. Weekday afternoons draw the biggest crowds.

3. Cone Palace, Kokomo, IN

Dinner and dessert in one stop is the whole idea at Cone Palace. Chili dogs come first, then soft serve, malts, or a milkshake to finish.

The coneys arrive hot and fresh, and they rank among the best in town. Corn dogs, breaded tenderloin sandwiches, onion rings, and fried mushrooms round out the comfort food lineup.

Ordering happens at the counter, and there is a drive-through plus outdoor seating for warm nights. Prices mostly fall in the budget range.

Late hours are a big plus. It opens at 9:30 AM daily and stays open until 10:30 PM most nights, or 11 PM on Friday and Saturday.

Find it at 55 County Rd West 300 S on the edge of Kokomo, with a free lot on site. Evenings, especially weekends, are when the crowd shows up.

4. Mister Coney, Fort Wayne, IN

Fort Wayne has room for more than one coney legend. On the north side, Mister Coney gives the downtown classic some friendly competition.

The quaint diner opens at 7 AM, so hashbrowns and coffee can come before the chili dogs. Later in the day, the Mr Coney, coney dogs with fries, and chili cheese fries take over.

The breaded tenderloin sandwich has its own following too. Prices stay low, and the wait staff keeps things moving.

It sits at 4525 Coldwater Rd with plenty of free parking, which is a nice change from downtown. A drive-through handles quick visits.

Hours run 7 AM to 8 PM most days and until 9 PM on Friday and Saturday. Sunday morning is the busy stretch, so arrive early.
