Some Of The Best Gyros In Arizona Come Wrapped In Warm Pita At These 6 Greek Spots

A good gyro is simple on paper: seasoned meat, tangy tzatziki, and a soft pita holding it all together. Getting that combo right is harder than it looks, and Arizona has a handful of spots that pull it off every single day.

This list covers six Greek restaurants from Tucson to Flagstaff, including a drive-thru, a college-town favorite, and a family-run counter near the desert foothills. Some are quick lunch stops and others are better for a sit-down dinner with friends.

Each one earned a place here because of what comes wrapped in that warm pita, plus a few extras that make the trip easy to plan. Save it for your next lunch break or road trip, and maybe send it to the friend who always argues about who makes the best gyro in the state.

1. Pappoule’s, Tucson, AZ

The word famous is right there on the menu, and the gyros sandwich at Pappoule’s backs it up. Expect mounds of gyro meat, plenty of thick tzatziki, and a soft pita, usually with a side salad on the plate.

The setup is easy. You order at the counter, grab a seat inside the clean, bright dining room or head out to the patio, and the food shows up fast.

Portions run large and prices stay reasonable, with most meals landing between $10 and $20 per person. Beyond the sandwich, the menu covers a Gyro Platter, a Gyros Deluxe, souvlaki, moussaka, dolmas, saganaki, and baklava for dessert.

I would save this one for a weeknight dinner before a movie. It is open Monday through Thursday from 11 AM to 8 PM, stays open until 9 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, and closes on Sundays.

Parking is usually plentiful at the La Cholla Boulevard location. Reservations are not taken, so plan around the busier Thursday through Saturday evenings if you want a quieter table.

2. George’s Famous Gyros & Pasta, Phoenix, AZ

Weekend gyro cravings will have to wait at George’s, because this north Phoenix shop only opens Monday through Friday. That weekday schedule, 11 AM to 8 PM, makes it a classic lunch-hour stop for people working nearby.

The gyro meat comes well seasoned, and the pita arrives warm and fluffy. Fans of variety will find chicken pitas, a vegetarian Texas Pita, pita pizzas, and Greek Fries alongside the original gyro.

The name says pasta too, and the menu leans into Greek, American, and Mediterranean comfort food. There is even a Chicago Dogg for anyone at the table who is not in a pita mood.

Families get high chairs and a kids’ menu, and dogs are welcome inside and out. Free Wi-Fi and curbside pickup make it handy for a quick working lunch or a dinner grabbed on the way home.

Finish with the homemade baklava. Tuesdays and Fridays tend to fill up around midday, so an early or late lunch is the smoother bet.

3. Taverna Modern Mediterranean, Flagstaff, AZ

Mountain air builds an appetite, and Flagstaff answers with gyros stuffed so full they can be tough to keep wrapped in the pita. That is a problem most people are happy to have.

Taverna brings a festive, sit-down feel to Greek standards. The menu runs from the Gyro Platter and gyro bowls to spanakopita, dolmades, calamari, saganaki, zucchini cakes, and a Chicken Santorini entree.

It sits a little higher on the price scale, around $20 to $30 per person, but the portions are generous and service moves quickly even when the room is busy.

Groups, college students, and families all fit in here. Kids get their own menu, including Kid’s Yia Yia’s Pasta, and there are high chairs and changing tables.

Hours are friendly to travelers, with the doors open every day starting at 11 AM. It stays open until 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, and free parking is usually easy to find.

4. Opas Grill on 4th Ave Greek American Cuisine, Tucson, AZ

Fourth Avenue is one of Tucson’s most walkable strips, full of shops and local eateries. Opas Grill gives that stroll a solid Greek stop at 500 N 4th Ave.

Family-owned and focused on tradition, the kitchen piles gyro meat high on a soft pita and tops it with a tangy tzatziki that gets plenty of attention. Gyro wraps, Greek fries, and a gyro salad served with Greek salad cover the classics.

Adventurous eaters can branch out to octopus, lamb dolmades, moussaka, or the Spicy Chicken Souvlaki Kabob. The Opa’s Combo Platter is the move if you cannot pick just one.

For dessert, there is baklava and rice pudding, plus Greek coffee to round things out.

Unlike several spots on this list, Opas takes reservations, and there is a private dining room for bigger gatherings. Most meals run $10 to $20, and the kitchen is open daily from 11 AM, with later hours until 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

5. Cave Greek Gyros, Cave Creek, AZ

Italian gyros are not something you see on every Greek menu. Cave Greek Gyros lists them right next to the classic gyro, which gives this small Cave Creek shop a fun twist.

The basics are handled well. The gyro meat is tender and well seasoned, the pita is soft and fresh, and the sauces, including fresh tzatziki, tie the whole thing together.

It is a family-owned spot with a cozy, quiet feel, located along Carefree Highway. That makes it an easy lunch for anyone heading out toward the Cave Creek and Carefree area.

Kebabs, a Gyros Salad, and baklava fill out the menu. Prices stay in the $10 to $20 range.

Hours run Monday through Saturday from 11 AM to 8 PM, and it is closed Sundays. Online ordering, curbside pickup, and delivery are all available if you would rather eat at home.

6. Z’s Greek, Phoenix, AZ

Not many Greek restaurants let you order a gyro without leaving your car. Z’s Greek on Indian School Road does, thanks to its drive-thru.

The gyro here comes loaded with meat, fresh lettuce and tomato, and a perfectly toasted pita. Pair it with freshly cooked fries, or go bigger with Z’s Greek Crazy Fries.

The gyro combo platter is a strong pick, with flavorful meat and fresh tzatziki. The Lamb Souvlaki Platter, the Village Salad Horiatiki, and a generous hummus appetizer with pita are also on the menu.

The space is bright and simple, built for quick meals. There is outdoor seating where dogs are welcome, plus free Wi-Fi inside.

The hours are the real bonus. Z’s opens at 9 AM on weekdays and 10 AM on weekends, and stays open until 10 PM every day, so an early lunch or late dinner both work.
