Sparks Has 6 Longtime Restaurants Regulars Still Treat Like A Second Kitchen

Every town has a few restaurants where the staff knows your order before you sit down. Sparks has more than its share, and some of them have been feeding the same families for decades.

This list covers six longtime spots, from a barbecue joint on Victorian Avenue to a drive-in on Prater Way to a 24-hour diner inside a casino. Some are best for breakfast, some for a burger and shake, and one is built for a slow steak dinner.

What they share is staying power and a crowd of regulars who keep coming back. If you live in the Reno and Sparks area, you might find a new favorite here.

If you are just passing through, these are the places that show what eating in Sparks is really like. Save this one for your next hungry afternoon.

1. BJ’s Barbecue, Sparks, NV

Since 1986, BJ’s Barbecue has been smoking meat on East Victorian Avenue, and the dining room still fills with regulars. That kind of track record says plenty about a barbecue joint.

The menu leans big. Beef ribs, pulled pork, tri tip, and Pete’s Meatloaf from the barbecue platters are the heavy hitters, and Southern sides like dirty rice keep things interesting.

Then there are the Kick Ass Fries, which have become something of a house signature. Save room for the bread pudding if you can.

Breakfast is a big part of the story too. The doors open at 6:30 AM most weekdays, and plates like tri tip and eggs or biscuits and gravy make an early start easy.

A few practical notes help here. BJ’s is closed Sunday and Monday, does not take reservations, and gets busiest on Friday and Saturday evenings, so calling ahead is smart.

Families are well covered with high chairs and a kids’ menu, and parking is free. I would aim for a midweek morning if you want a quieter table.

2. Scoopers Drive-in, Sparks, NV

Milkshakes in just about any flavor you can name. That alone has kept Scoopers Drive-in on Prater Way busy for years.

The place has an old-fashioned drive-in setup with counter service and a retro look, and plenty of Sparks residents have been ordering here for as long as they can remember. It is the kind of stop that gets passed down through families.

Burgers carry the menu. The Half Pound Burger, the Pepper Jack Burger, and the Shroom Burger are popular picks, and the Honcho burger is a known favorite for big appetites.

Sides are not an afterthought. Chili cheese fries and onion rings round out the tray nicely.

Prices sit around $10 to $20 per person, and hours run 11 AM to 8 PM every day. Expect a line on weekend evenings, since reservations are not a thing here.

Dogs are allowed, there is outdoor seating, and kids have their own menu. A shake after a Sparks summer evening is hard to argue with.

3. Sparks Coffee Shop, Sparks, NV

Counter stools, booths, and a menu built around breakfast. Sparks Coffee Shop on Oddie Boulevard keeps things old-school, and its regulars would not have it any other way.

Biscuits and gravy are the headline act, and the gravy has a serious reputation around town. Portions run large, so arriving hungry is a good plan.

The menu has more range than you might expect from a classic coffee shop. Carnitas huevos rancheros, a Yucatan shrimp omelette, seafood Benedict, and Supreme French Toast all share space with the basics.

Scones and a solid tea selection add a nice touch for lighter appetites.

Hours are short, so plan around them. The shop is open Monday through Saturday from 8 AM to 2 PM and closed Sunday.

Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays bring the biggest crowds, and there is often a wait. Free parking and kid-friendly extras like high chairs make it an easy family breakfast spot.

4. Great Basin Brewing Co. – Sparks, Sparks, NV

Here is a fun bit of local history. Great Basin Brewing Co. has been operating on Victorian Square since 1993, making it Nevada’s oldest operating brewpub.

That longevity has turned it into a neighborhood staple. The space is casual, with a historic feel and bar games, plus live music on some nights.

The food is straightforward pub comfort. A Basket of Brewery Fries is the classic starter, and the Patty Melt, Rib Eye French Dip, fish and chips, and The 50 50 Burger cover the main event.

Brewhouse nachos work well for a table that likes to share.

Hours stretch from 11 AM daily, with later closing at 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. Those weekend evenings are the busiest, while weekday late mornings are much calmer.

Outdoor seating welcomes dogs, and high chairs and a kids’ menu are available. Curbside pickup and takeout help on nights when the couch wins.

5. Western Village Steakhouse, Sparks, NV

Not every longtime favorite is a diner. Western Village Steakhouse, inside the Western Village Inn and Casino on Nichols Boulevard, is where Sparks goes when dinner calls for a nicer shirt.

It has the feel of a classic old school steakhouse, with an elegant, intimate dining room and attentive table service. Anniversaries and birthdays fit right in.

The blackened prime rib with whiskey butter is a standout, along with prime cut rib eye and a Beef Wellington. Starters lean classic, with escargot, prawns, French onion soup, and Caesar salad.

For dessert, Bananas Foster brings a bit of tableside-era tradition to the end of the meal.

The steakhouse serves dinner only, opening at 4:30 PM daily. Reservations are accepted and recommended, especially for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings.

Free parking makes the evening simple. This is the one I would save for a celebration.

6. Rosie’s Café, Sparks, NV

Three in the morning and craving steak and eggs. Rosie’s Café inside the Nugget Casino Resort has you covered, because it never closes.

The diner has been part of the Nugget for decades, and the charm has held up. Rotating ceiling fans, dark furniture, and an open kitchen give it a classic casino coffee shop look.

Breakfast runs around the clock. The NY Strip Steak and Eggs is a favorite, and a graveyard steak and eggs special has been a draw for the late-night crowd.

Lunch and dinner bring burgers, club sandwiches, fish and chips, and onion rings. Portions are generous, and a full vegetarian menu is available too.

Prices land around $10 to $20 per person. Reservations are accepted, which is handy for groups.

Parking options include a free garage and valet. Whether it is a weekday breakfast or a post-show meal, this booth is always ready.
