Fall in Tennessee practically begs you to roll the windows down and take the long way home. The best detours end at an orchard, where the apples get turned into fried pies, cider donuts, dumplings, and cakes right on the farm.
From the Sequatchie Valley to the foothills of the Smokies and the edge of Nashville, these five stops make a scenic drive taste even better. Save this list, grab a cooler for the apples, and plan your next weekend around a bakery counter.
1. Oren Wooden’s Apple House, Pikeville, TN

Out in the Sequatchie Valley, New Harmony Road leads to one of the most satisfying apple stops in the state. Oren Wooden’s Apple House pairs fresh orchard apples with a kitchen that cooks real, home-style meals.
The bakery side is where many people end up lingering. Apple cake, apple dumplings, and fried apple pies are the stars, and a dumpling with ice cream is a classic order.
Hungry for more than dessert? The menu leans into the apple theme with apple cider BBQ and apple stuffed pork chops.
On busy fall days, the dining room can fill up fast, so an early lunch is a smart move.
Before heading out, browse the produce and handmade crafts, then pick up a jug of apple cider for the ride. The Apple House is open Monday through Saturday from 8 AM to 7 PM and Sunday from 1 to 6 PM, with a free parking lot on site.
2. Carver’s Applehouse Restaurant, Cosby, TN

Cosby sits on the quieter side of the Smokies, and Carver’s makes a great reason to take that route. The operation includes an apple orchard, a produce store, a pie room, and a sit-down restaurant with orchard views.
Dessert choices run deep. Baked apples, apple fritters, fried apple pies, cherry cobbler, and peach cobbler all show up, and the pie room also scoops ice cream.
The restaurant serves comfort classics like chicken and dumplings, with most meals landing around $10 to $20 per person. Kids are welcome, with high chairs and a kids’ menu available.
Want to take the orchard home? Pick-your-own bushels have run about $32, and the store stocks apples, jams, ciders, and caramel apples.
Plan ahead, because Carver’s opens Thursday through Sunday from 11 AM to 5 PM and does not take reservations.
3. The Apple Barn & Cider Mill, Sevierville, TN

A barn built in 1910 anchors this working orchard just off the busy Smoky Mountain tourist corridor. It is an easy stop on the way to or from Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.
Head to the Cider Bar first. It pours apple cider cold or slushy and sells fried pies, muffins, cider donuts, and more at friendly prices.
The general store is a browser’s playground, stocked with fruit butters, ciders, candles, and souvenirs. Various fresh-baked pies make easy gifts, or an easy excuse to skip cooking dinner.
Saturday afternoons draw the biggest crowds, so a weekday visit is calmer. Hours run 8 AM to 7 PM Monday, 9 AM to 7 PM Tuesday through Saturday, and 9 AM to 5:30 PM Sunday.
4. Apple Valley Orchard, Cleveland, TN

Fritter fans, this one’s for you. Apple Valley Orchard in Cleveland runs its original store and bakery right at the orchard on Weese Road.
The bakery case keeps things apple-focused with turnovers, fried pies, and apple fritters. Fresh apples and apple cider round out the haul.
I like this stop for a Southeast Tennessee loop because it is simple and centered on the fruit itself. Grab a fritter for the car and a bag of apples for the week.
Hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM and Sunday from noon to 5 PM, with on-site parking.
5. Breeden’s Orchard, Mt. Juliet, TN

Founded in 1974, Breeden’s Orchard has been growing apples and peaches in Mt. Juliet for half a century.
That makes it a handy fall escape for anyone in the Nashville area.
The 12-acre working farm includes a scratch bakery, a farm store, a cidery, and an activity yard. Cider donuts are the big draw, and plenty of families make them a yearly tradition along with fresh apples and cider.
The activity yard gives kids room to roam while grown-ups shop the farm store. It is still very much a family-run operation focused on Tennessee agriculture.
Evening hours make it easy to fit in after work. Breeden’s is closed Monday, open 9 AM to 5 PM Tuesday and Wednesday, 9 AM to 9 PM Thursday through Saturday, and 9 AM to 8 PM Sunday, with free parking.
From the valleys of East Tennessee to the suburbs of Middle Tennessee, each of these orchards proves a fall drive is only as good as its snack stop. Pick one, pick two, or make a weekend of all five.
