Some of the best meals in Tennessee come wrapped in paper and handed through a window. Across the state, small towns still have burger stands where the menu is simple, the prices are fair, and the grill stays busy from lunch until close.
This list covers nine of them, from mountain valleys in East Tennessee to quiet courthouse towns out west. You will find slawburgers in Fayetteville, cereal burgers in Selmer, pizza burgers in Tazewell, and plenty of crinkle fries in between.
Most of these spots are closed on Sundays, and a few keep shorter hours than you might expect, so a little planning goes a long way. If you like road trips with good food as the reward, this is a list worth saving.
Pack an appetite, check the hours, and maybe bring a friend who never says no to onion rings.
1. Jiffy Burger, Manchester, TN

Checkerboard floors and walls covered in collectibles give Jiffy Burger the look of a diner that never left the 1950s. It sits at 1001 Hillsboro Blvd in Manchester, the Coffee County seat, a town many travelers know best from the Bonnaroo festival.
The menu leans into that connection with the Bonnaroo Burger and Tater Tots, one of the house favorites. Cheeseburgers are the main event, and you can choose between crinkle fries and batter-dipped fries, which is a nice option most stands skip.
A long list of add-ons lets you build a burger exactly how you like it. The kitchen also turns out a chili dog, a taco salad, breakfast, and desserts, so it works for more than one meal of the day.
Service is quick, and there is a drive-through for anyone in a hurry to get back on the road. Inside, families will find high chairs and a kids’ menu.
Jiffy Burger is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 AM to 9 PM. Saturdays get busy most of the day, so plan around that if you want a quieter stop.
2. Frostee Freeze Drive-In, Tazewell, TN

Ever had a pizza burger? Frostee Freeze Drive-In in Tazewell makes one, and it is a good reason to stop in this small Claiborne County town surrounded by mountain valley scenery.
The drive-in has a retro style and a menu built around classic burgers, fries, onion rings, and grilled chicken sandwiches. Prices sit in the budget range, often under ten dollars per person.
Dessert carries real weight here. The ice cream and custard, shakes, and banana split are big draws, and fresh fruit shows up on the menu too.
Frostee Freeze opens at 9 AM Monday through Saturday and stays open until 10 PM. Those long hours make it handy for breakfast, a late lunch, or an evening treat.
You will find it at 1617 N Broad St, with outdoor seating and plenty of parking. Friday nights and Saturday afternoons draw the biggest crowds.
3. Carl’s Drive In, Loudon, TN

Bring cash. Carl’s Drive In on East Lee Highway in Loudon is a cash-only stand, and that old-school detail matches the rest of the experience.
Loudon is a historic river town in East Tennessee, and Carl’s has long served burgers, hot dogs, and milkshakes to the community. The burgers are homemade, and the cheeseburgers come with crinkle-cut fries or onion rings on the side.
Save room for the hot fudge cake. It is one of the standout desserts and a nice change from the usual shake.
Prices are low, and service moves fast. Note that there is no restroom on site, so plan your road trip stops accordingly.
Carl’s is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 AM to 9:30 PM. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings are the busiest times.
4. Debbie’s Drive In, Newport, TN

Car service still happens at Debbie’s Drive In, which makes it a fun stop for anyone heading toward the Great Smoky Mountains through Newport.
The burgers are thick Angus patties cooked on the griddle, paired with crinkle-cut fries and thick milkshakes. A steak and cheese sandwich is another solid pick if you want something different.
Ice cream treats round things out, including a banana split. Picnic tables outside give you a place to eat in the open air.
Located at 157 W Broadway St, Debbie’s often has a wait, and it does not take reservations. Thursday afternoons, Friday evenings, and Saturday afternoons tend to be busiest.
Hours run Monday through Saturday from 11 AM to 9 PM. There is no restroom on site, so keep that in mind on a long drive.
5. Ken’s Fast Foods, Fayetteville, TN

Fayetteville takes its slawburgers seriously, and Ken’s Fast Foods is one of the best places in town to try one.
A slawburger is a burger topped with coleslaw, and it is part of the food heritage of this historic Middle Tennessee courthouse town. Ken’s serves it as a signature item, along with double deluxe burgers, chicken sandwiches, chicken fingers, hot dogs, and onion rings.
Food comes out hot and fast from the counter. Prices stay friendly, usually under ten dollars a person.
Timing matters here. Ken’s is open weekdays from 10:30 AM to 6 PM and Saturdays until 3 PM, so this is a lunch or early dinner stop.
Find it at 505 College St W. Afternoons are the busy stretch, while early evenings are much calmer.
6. Snack Shack, Selmer, TN

West Tennessee has its own burger tradition, and the Snack Shack in downtown Selmer keeps it going with cereal burgers, also called slugburgers.
These patties are stretched with a filler before frying, which gives them a crisp edge and a style you will not find in most of the state. The Snack Shack also serves regular double cheeseburgers with fries at very low prices.
The spot has been part of downtown Selmer for decades. It has changed hands over the years, and the current owners have kept it a reliable stop.
Early risers will like the hours. It opens at 5 AM Tuesday through Friday and runs until 2 PM, while Saturday hours are 6 AM to 1 PM.
Breakfast is on the menu too, so a sunrise road trip through McNairy County works well. You will find it at 152 S 2nd St.
7. Clarence’s Drive In, Erwin, TN

Breakfast at 6 AM, a burger at noon, and hamburger steak for dinner are all possible at Clarence’s Drive In in Erwin.
This Unicoi County spot sits in the Nolichucky River valley, a popular area for outdoor trips. Clarence’s has a 50s look and a large menu of Southern home cooking.
Deluxe hamburgers and fries are a staple. Biscuits and gravy, fried green tomatoes, and hamburger steak show the country kitchen side of the menu.
Portions are generous. The dining room offers table service and a quiet setting, and there is also a drive-through.
Clarence’s is one of the few stops on this list that accepts reservations, which helps with groups. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 6 AM to 9 PM, at 1502 N Main Ave.
8. Dairy Delight, Paris, TN

Butterscotch fans, take note. Dairy Delight in Paris offers both a butterscotch sundae and a butterscotch shake, which you do not see on many menus anymore.
This is an old school fast food stand on East Wood Street, known for its drive-thru. Double cheeseburgers, crinkle fries, coleslaw, and onion rings make up the classic order.
The ice cream side is just as strong. Oreo twists, large cones, sundaes, and shakes give you plenty of choices.
Prices stay low, and there is outdoor seating if you want to stretch your legs. High chairs and a kids’ menu help families too.
Dairy Delight is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 AM to 8 PM. Mornings are quietest if you want to beat the line.
9. Vic’s Burgers, Cheesesteaks & fries, Madisonville, TN

Not every burger stand on a Tennessee road trip sticks to burgers alone. Vic’s in Madisonville adds Philly cheesesteaks to the lineup.
The Vic’s Special Double Cheeseburger is the headline item. It comes in a hearty size, and you can pair it with fries or tater tots.
This is a drive-thru-only stop at 711 Englewood Rd, so plan to eat in the car or at your next scenic pullover. There is no dining room.
Madisonville is a small Monroe County community, and Vic’s fits its quick, easygoing pace. A kids’ menu makes it easy to feed the whole car.
Hours are Monday through Saturday from 11 AM to 7 PM. Tuesday afternoons and Friday afternoons get busy, while mornings stay quiet.
Wherever your route takes you, one of these nine stands is probably not far off. Check the hours, bring a little cash, and let the burgers set the itinerary.
