The reality is that many foods that we label as “junk” often contain legitimate vitamins and minerals that can contribute to our health. Of course, these benefits don’t give you a free pass to abandon your healthy lifestyle, as we’re just making you understand certain health benefits. Well, it turns out that chewing gum can actually give your brain a little workout. Studies have shown that the act of chewing can increase alertness and improve concentration, especially when you need to power through a task. Some even suggest it can enhance your memory aspects, particularly working memory. The chewing increases blood flow to the brain and may trigger the release of insulin that improves cognitive function.

Here’s a reason to feel less guilty about Pizza Friday. The secret lies in the tomato sauce, which is a source of lycopene. It’s a powerful antioxidant linked to a reduced risk of health problems like heart disease to certain cancers. Studies have shown that a high intake of tomato sauce, which is two or more servings a week, is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular issues.

Cheese is a good source of calcium and protein, which are essential for building and maintaining strong bones. Studies have linked cheese consumption to higher bone mineral density and a lower risk of fractures. But the benefits don’t stop there, as fermented cheeses, like cheddar and gouda, are also packed with probiotics, which are friendly bacteria that support a healthy gut microbiome and boost your immune system.

Particularly, walnuts are noteworthy for their high content of omega-3 fatty acids, the same heart-healthy fats found in fish.

It’s also a great source of protein and fiber, both of which help you feel full and satisfied for hours. The key is choosing natural varieties without added sugars or hydrogenated oils. 

3. French Fries

While the deep-frying process of French Fries isn’t the healthiest, potatoes themselves are packed with essential nutrients that your body craves. They are a good source of potassium, which is a mineral crucial for heart health and blood pressure regulation. They also provide a good dose of Vitamin C and Vitamin B6. Just opt for baked or air-fried fries and leave the skin on.

The magic lies in the high concentration of flavanols in dark chocolate, which have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Just make sure it’s dark chocolate, as milk chocolate didn’t show the same benefits.
