Some of the best lunches in Tennessee are served within sight of a county courthouse. In towns like Shelbyville, Covington, and Byrdstown, the square is still where people meet, swap news, and sit down for a plate of fried chicken, catfish, or meatloaf with sides that taste homemade because they are.
These cafes are not chasing trends. They serve plate lunches, daily specials, biscuits, and pie the same way small-town kitchens have for generations.
Prices stay friendly, service moves quickly, and nobody blinks if you order dessert first. This list covers four courthouse-square spots that still keep that tradition going, from a Shelbyville meat-and-three on the square since 1945 to a Byrdstown cafe with weekend bluegrass.
Two of them sit on the same square in Covington, which makes for an easy road trip. Save this one for your next drive through small-town Tennessee.
1. Pope’s Cafe, Shelbyville, TN

Since 1945, Pope’s Cafe has held its spot on the Public Square in Shelbyville, right across from the Bedford County Courthouse. That kind of staying power usually means a kitchen knows exactly what it is doing.
At heart, Pope’s is a meat-and-three. Country fried chicken with mashed potatoes, white gravy, and a side of vegetables is the kind of plate that defines lunch here, and the veggies get as much attention as the meat.
Burgers are a big draw too. The bacon cheeseburger is thick and juicy, and fried chicken, plate lunches, and homemade pie round out a menu that keeps things simple on purpose.
Breakfast deserves its own mention. Country ham, biscuits and gravy, and red eye gravy are all on offer, starting at 7 AM on weekdays and Saturdays and 8 AM on Sunday.
The dining room is casual and laid back, with paintings hanging on the walls. Hours run 7 AM to 8 PM Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 3 PM Saturday, and 8 AM to 2 PM Sunday.
Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings get busy, so a weekday visit is the calmer bet.
2. Court Square Cafe, Covington, TN

Catfish is the dish that puts Court Square Cafe on plenty of West Tennessee lunch maps. Fried and served with classic country sides, it is the kind of plate that makes a detour toward the Tipton County Courthouse feel completely reasonable.
The menu changes with home-cooked daily specials, and the food is made fresh each day. Meatloaf, chicken and dressing, and club sandwiches are regular reasons people pull up a chair.
Portions run generous, and service is fast. That makes it a smart pick for anyone with a short lunch break or a long drive ahead.
Early birds will appreciate the 6 AM opening time Monday through Saturday. Most days the doors close at 2 PM, but Friday stretches until 7 PM, which is the one evening to catch supper here.
Sunday is closed.
Parking is usually easy, with free street spots around the square and a free lot. The cafe also handles catering and accepts reservations, handy for groups.
3. Dixie Cafe, Byrdstown, TN

Chocolate gravy over biscuits. If that sounds unusual, it is a longtime Appalachian breakfast treat, and Dixie Cafe in Byrdstown still puts it on the plate.
The cafe sits at 31 Courthouse Square, facing the Pickett County Courthouse in a town of fewer than 1,000 people. Small town, big menu.
Lunch leans hearty, with hand-breaded chicken strips and home-style cooking. Homemade pies are a specialty, and the peanut butter pie is one I would save room for.
Here is the twist that sets it apart from the rest of this list. On weekends, the cafe hosts live bluegrass music, so a Saturday meal can come with a show.
The kitchen also offers plenty of lighter, healthier choices alongside the comfort food. Dixie Cafe is open 7 AM to 8 PM Monday through Saturday and closed Sunday.
Reservations are not taken, but parking is free and plentiful. Friday evening is the busiest stretch, while most weekday mornings stay relaxed.
4. Old Town Hall & Cafe, Covington, TN

Look up when you walk into Old Town Hall & Cafe. The room features a unique horizontal double ceiling fan, one of those quirky details that makes a historic building memorable.
Located at 110 E Court Square, the cafe overlooks the Tipton County Courthouse, just steps from Court Square Cafe. Two lunch stops on one square makes Covington an easy town to plan around.
Part restaurant and part boutique, this spot is built around lunch. Daily menu specials and casual comfort food are the focus, with dessert, coffee, and tea also available.
Timing matters here. The kitchen serves only from 10:30 AM to 2 PM, Monday through Saturday, and stays closed on Sunday.
Outdoor seating, takeout, and delivery are options, and street parking around the square is free. After eating, the boutique side gives a reason to linger a little longer before heading back out on the road.
