These 6 Alabama Meat-And-Threes Keep Regulars Fed Through Every Cold Snap

When the temperature drops in Alabama, a lot of people skip the fancy menus and head straight for a plate of fried chicken, greens, and cornbread. That is the magic of the meat-and-three, where you pick one main dish and three sides and leave full and happy.

These spots have been feeding regulars for years, and some have been at it for decades. From Montgomery to Mobile to a gas station hot bar in Pell City, here are six places worth knowing about before the next cold front rolls in.

1. Martin’s Restaurant, Montgomery, AL

Martin’s has been serving Montgomery since 1940. That makes it one of the original meat-and-three restaurants in the capital city, and it still runs like one.

The fried chicken is the name everyone knows here. It comes crispy and lands on the plate next to sides like turnip greens, speckled butter beans, creamy mashed potatoes, collard greens, and macaroni and cheese.

Bread is not an afterthought. Homemade biscuits and buttered cornbread both show up, and the sweet tea is a big part of the tradition.

Country fried steak with brown gravy is another solid pick if you want something different from chicken. Save room for the homemade meringue pies, sold by the slice.

Plan around the hours. Martin’s is open Monday through Friday from 11 AM to 7 PM and Sunday from 10:45 AM to 2:30 PM, and it closes on Saturdays.

Sunday afternoon is the busiest stretch, so a weekday lunch is the easier play. Most plates fall in the $10 to $20 range, and parking is usually easy.

2. Niki’s West, Birmingham, AL

Bring an appetite and a plan, because the cafeteria line at Niki’s West stretches with choices. Vegetables are the real headliner, and there are a lot of them.

You walk the line, point at what you want, and build your plate. Meat-and-three options sit alongside seafood and full vegetable plates, so non-meat eaters have plenty to work with.

The Greek baked chicken nods to the Greek roots common in Birmingham’s restaurant scene. Yeast rolls, homemade apple pie, and cheesecake round out the tray nicely.

Niki’s West has a big, roomy dining area and a salad bar too. It handles groups well and keeps the line moving fast.

Hours are weekday only, Monday through Friday from 10:30 AM to 5 PM. Reservations are not taken, and weekday afternoons tend to be the busiest.

This is the kind of place I would take out-of-town guests who want to see what Birmingham eats on a regular Tuesday.

3. Mary’s Southern Cooking, Mobile, AL

Most meat-and-threes shut down by mid-afternoon. Mary’s Southern Cooking stays open until 9 PM Wednesday through Sunday, which makes it a rare dinner option on this list.

The setup is cafeteria style and unfussy. You choose from fried and baked chicken, beef tips, pork chops, meatloaf, and a chopped steak dinner.

The sides go deep into soul food territory. Succotash, greens, fried okra, black-eyed peas, yams, and rich mac and cheese are all part of the lineup, and cornbread comes with the meal.

Red beans and rice is a good value pick for a lighter wallet. Portions run large, and service moves quickly.

Mary’s sits at 3966 Airport Blvd. Monday and Tuesday hours are shorter, from 11 AM to 6 PM.

Sunday afternoon draws the biggest crowd, so another day may mean less waiting.

4. Johnny’s Restaurant, Homewood, AL

Greek dishes and Southern meat-and-three plates share the menu at Johnny’s, and that mix is a big reason it stands out.

The counter-service format keeps things quick. Meatloaf and fried shrimp are two of the most talked-about mains, and the grit cake is a side worth trying.

Macaroni and red beans hold their own too. Add yeast rolls and sweet tea, and the plate is complete.

For dessert, the chocolate peanut butter torte is the standout. It is the kind of treat that makes a lunch break feel longer than it is.

Johnny’s is a lunch spot, open Sunday through Friday from 11 AM to 2:30 PM and closed Saturday. There is outdoor seating and free Wi-Fi.

Parking can be tricky in this part of Homewood. Give yourself a few extra minutes, especially around Friday lunch.

5. Triple G’s Food Store, Pell City, AL

A food store hot bar at 5 AM might not sound like a meat-and-three destination. Triple G’s in Pell City proves otherwise.

There is no table service here. You stand in a short line, tell the staff which meat and vegetables you want, and then grab a seat.

The daily hot bar offers a big spread of meats, vegetables, and potatoes. Mornings bring eggs, biscuits, and breakfast sandwiches for early commuters.

That early start is the real perk on a cold morning. Triple G’s opens at 5 AM Monday through Saturday, staying open until 7:30 PM on weekdays and noon on Saturday.

It sits at 5000 Cogswell Ave with plenty of free parking. Midweek mornings are the busiest, so expect company.

6. City Cafe Northport Alabama, Northport, AL

Opening at 4 AM on weekdays, City Cafe is ready long before most of Northport wakes up.

The cafe sits at 408 Main Ave and has a small-town, historic feel. College students from nearby Tuscaloosa mix with longtime regulars.

Comfort food runs the menu, from fried green tomatoes to mac and cheese. A classic order is catfish with coleslaw, pinto beans, and macaroni and cheese.

Chicken and dumplings are a strong cold-weather choice. Fresh vegetables and sweet tea keep the plates honest, and a double cheeseburger is there if you want a break from the sides.

Prices stay affordable, and service is quick. City Cafe is open Monday through Friday until 3:30 PM and closes on weekends.

There is usually a wait, so arriving early helps. Wherever your cold snap finds you, one of these six tables is ready with a full plate.
