These 7 Oregon Taquerias Make Tortillas By Hand While You Wait

Most tortillas in America come out of a plastic bag, and most of us have stopped noticing. That is what makes the places on this list so fun to find.

At each of these Oregon taquerias, someone presses fresh masa and cooks your tortilla on the griddle after you order, often right where you can watch. The difference shows up in the first bite, with a softer, warmer, more tender tortilla that holds up to juicy meat and salsa.

The list stretches from Medford and Bend to Eugene, Salem, Woodburn, and Portland, so there is a good chance one is near your next road trip. Some are tiny counters with short lunch hours, while others stay open well past midnight.

A few have their own specialties, like charcoal-grilled meats, quesabirria, or Michoacan-style tacos. Save this list for the next time a taco craving hits.

1. Charcoalazo, Medford, OR

Charcoal does most of the talking at this Medford counter. The meats here are grilled over charcoal, which is still an uncommon sight at Oregon taquerias.

The tortillas get the same hands-on attention. They are made fresh in house every day, pressed by hand at street taco size, and often shaped right in front of customers for both tacos and burritos.

Find it at 404 N Central Ave, where prices run about $1 to $10 per person. That makes it a cheap and quick lunch stop.

Timing matters, though. Charcoalazo is open Monday from 11 AM to 3 PM and Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 AM to 6 PM, with weekends closed.

Parking is easy with a free lot and street spots. Dine-in, outdoor seating, takeout, and curbside pickup are all options, and there is even a vegetarian take on the carne asada taco on the menu.

2. La Carreta De Mí Tierra Taquería, Salem, OR

Night owls in Salem, this one is for you. On Fridays and Saturdays, La Carreta De Mí Tierra Taquería stays open from 1 PM all the way to 4 AM.

The tortillas are hechas a mano, shaped and cooked right in front of you. That kind of care at 2 in the morning is hard to find anywhere.

Street tacos are the specialty, and the menu reaches beyond the usual fillings. Adventurous eaters can try tongue, brains, and intestines, and portions run generous.

The toppings bar is a highlight of its own. Expect spicy pickled onions, cilantro, onions, lime wedges, cucumbers, and radishes for building each taco your way.

Plan around the schedule at 3728 Silverton Rd NE. It is closed Monday through Wednesday, opens Thursday at 4 PM, and runs noon to 1 AM on Sunday.

Reservations are not taken, but parking is usually plentiful.

3. El Taquero, Bend, OR

Birria fans in Central Oregon already know the name. El Taquero is a food truck in Bend known for its signature quesotacos de birria, served on tortillas made by hand.

Those tortillas are pressed fresh while the kitchen works through each order. Watching that happen is part of the appeal.

The rest of the menu backs it up. Al pastor, carne asada tacos, and burritos all get attention, along with well-seasoned sauces.

You will find the truck at 319 SW Century Dr, on the way toward the west side of town. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 9 PM.

Parking can be a little tight, so a weekday lunch might be easier. Delivery and catering are also available, which is handy for feeding a crowd after a day outdoors.

4. El Nopalito, Eugene, OR

Here is a taqueria where the tortilla press might be the most popular thing in the room. At El Nopalito, cooks roll balls of masa and press tortillas fresh for each order.

The menu goes well beyond basic tacos. Look for carnitas, huaraches, pambazo, quesadillas de papa, and a seasonal salad called ensalada de temporada.

Vegetarians get a full menu instead of an afterthought. Several dishes are vegan, including chips and guacamole.

The restaurant sits at 1203 Willamette St #140 in Eugene. Hours run 11 AM to 8 PM Monday through Thursday, 11 AM to 9 PM Friday and Saturday, and 11 AM to 3 PM Sunday.

Friday and Saturday evenings get busy. I would aim for an earlier weekday visit if you want a quieter lunch.

5. Luis’s Taqueria, Woodburn, OR

Woodburn has one of the strongest Mexican food scenes in the Willamette Valley, and Luis’s Taqueria is a solid reason to stop. This casual storefront counter serves Michoacán-style tacos, tortas, and plenty more.

Tortillas come off the griddle fresh as you order your tacos. It is a simple detail that sets the place apart.

The menu is big. Tacos de lengua, tripas, and chicharrón sit alongside tacos dorados con pollo adobado, tostadas de ceviche, enchiladas, and a super burrito.

The chimichanga with creamy pepper sauce has its own following. Prices stay friendly, and families will find high chairs ready.

Look for it at 523 N Front St, open daily from 10 AM. Weekend afternoons are busiest, and street parking can take a minute to find.

6. Taqueria Las Panchitas, Salem, OR

Sabor casero, or homemade flavor, is the promise on the menu at Taqueria Las Panchitas. The tortillas are made by hand, fresh with every order.

That gives the tacos a soft, tender base. It also makes the quesabirria a smart first pick.

Salem’s second entry on this list has more flexible hours than the first. It is open every day starting at 10 AM, until 10 PM most nights and until 1 AM on Friday and Saturday.

The address is 2908 Market St NE, with a free lot and street parking. Weekend afternoons draw the biggest crowds, while weekday mornings stay calm.

Need it to go? Curbside pickup, takeout, and delivery are all options.

7. La Cuchara, Portland, OR

Lunch in Portland’s Central Eastside just got an upgrade. La Cuchara is a family-owned spot inside a food court, and its handmade tortillas are the signature.

Each tortilla is made to order. That freshness pairs with well-seasoned meats and portions that lean large for the price.

Service moves quickly, which suits a weekday lunch break. Hours are Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM, and it is closed on weekends.

The address is 1345 SE 2nd Ave. Free street parking exists, but spots can be tricky, so walking or biking in is a good plan.

Eat at the food court or take your tacos to go.
