Warm Up This Fall With The Homemade Soup At These 7 Ohio Lunch Counters

Fall in Ohio calls for a bowl of soup and a stool at the counter. Some of the best bowls in the state are not found at fancy restaurants but at old diners, Amish country cafes, and small-town lunch spots.

This list covers seven places where the soup is made in-house and served with sandwiches, cornbread, or a slice of pie. Save it for your next chilly day or your next road trip across the Buckeye State.

1. Boyd & Wurthmann Restaurant, Berlin, OH

Show up at breakfast and you will likely find a room full of locals. Come at lunch and there may be a line out front, which tells you plenty about this Berlin favorite.

Boyd & Wurthmann has been serving homestyle Amish cooking since around the 1940s. The old-style dining room has tables, booths, and a real lunch counter, so solo diners can grab a seat and settle in.

Soup fans should look for the ham and bean soup, especially with a side of cornbread. The rest of the menu leans hearty, with pot roast sandwiches, hot open-faced beef sandwiches, country fried steak, and chicken salad.

Save room for pie, because house-baked pies are the specialty here. Black raspberry and peanut butter are two flavors on the menu.

Hours run Monday through Thursday from 5:30 AM to 3:30 PM, with later hours until 7 PM on Friday and Saturday. It is closed Sunday and does not take reservations, so early weekday visits are the calmer choice.

2. Der Dutchman, Bellville, OH

Can’t pick just one soup? At Der Dutchman in Bellville, you may not have to.

Soup is part of the salad bar and the lunch and dinner buffets here. Potato and ham soups show up often, and a couple of homemade soups are usually offered at a time.

The cream of mushroom soup has a strong following, and the ham and bean soup earns plenty of praise too. The salad bar backs it up with pasta salad, potato salad, macaroni salad, and ham or chicken salad.

Beyond the bowl, the menu includes broasted chicken with two sides, homemade noodles, Dutch apple pie, and cream pies. There is also a gift shop to browse after lunch.

I would save this one for a family outing, since it offers high chairs, a kids’ menu, and plenty of parking. It is open Monday through Saturday from 7 AM to 8 PM and accepts reservations.

3. Scotty’s Cafe, Columbus, OH

Tomato basil soup is the reason many people know Scotty’s Cafe. The strip-mall location on East Broad Street keeps things simple, and the soup does the talking.

Pair it with a tuna melt on rye or the big roast beef melt, both of which come up often as go-to orders. The menu also lists a grilled cheese with a cup of soup, a classic fall combo.

Mushroom soup appears in the rotation too. Other favorites include Reuben sandwiches, latkes, omelets, and French toast.

Here is a fun bonus. Diners sometimes get free chocolate-covered strawberries, a sweet touch for a no-fuss lunch spot.

Plan ahead, since Scotty’s is only open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 2 PM. Curbside pickup and takeout are available for busy workdays.

4. Rebecca’s Bistro – Walnut Creek, OH

Lunch inside a restored 19th-century log cabin is a pretty good start. Rebecca’s Bistro in Walnut Creek adds specialty soups made in-house to the deal.

The tomato basil soup is the star, with a slightly sweet flavor that pairs well with the sandwiches. The Cuban sandwich with tomato bisque is a menu highlight, and the turkey berry sandwich is another popular pick.

Salads get attention here too. Look for the homemade herb dressing, the peach and blueberry salad, and the corn bread salad.

This family-owned cafe also serves breakfast items like creamed eggs and quiche. For dessert, the chocolate spoon cake is on the menu.

Hours are Monday through Saturday from 8 AM to 3 PM. Parking can be tricky and there is often a wait, but reservations are accepted and outdoor seating welcomes dogs.

5. Schmucker’s Restaurant, Toledo, OH

Since 1948, Schmucker’s has been a Toledo tradition. The family-owned diner with yellow brick walls still serves scratch-made comfort food to a steady crowd.

For a chilly day, the chili soup is a smart order. It sits well next to a BLT, chicken tenders, the Wimpy Burger Platter, or chicken and biscuits.

Of course, pie is the headliner. Schmucker’s offers more than 20 kinds, including chocolate peanut butter, cherry, and banana cream.

Portions are big, prices are fair, and food is cooked to order. Counter seating makes it easy to pop in alone for a quick bowl.

The diner opens Monday through Saturday from 6 AM to 4 PM. Reservations are not taken, but parking is usually easy to find.

6. The Spot Restaurant – Sidney, OH

Few lunch counters in Ohio can trace their roots back to 1907. The Spot in Sidney can, and it wears that history proudly with a 1950s look.

This is a counter-serve spot, so you order up front and grab a seat. Service is fast, which helps on a busy weekday.

Vegetable soup is a menu highlight and a solid fall pick. Add breaded mushrooms, a burger, or fries for a full lunch.

Leave room for pie. Choices include old fashioned cream pie, strawberry and pecan, Dutch apple, and custard.

It is open daily, from 11 AM to 8 PM on weekdays and 9 AM to 8 PM on weekends. There is even a drive-through for soup on the go.

7. Over The Counter, Worthington, OH

With a name like Over The Counter, this Worthington stop fits right in on a lunch counter list. The seat-yourself setup and retro style make it easy to drop in.

The chicken and wild rice soup is a cozy fall order. It pairs nicely with a pulled pork sandwich, an Italian chicken sandwich, or a turkey club.

The corned beef Reuben comes generously portioned on swirled bread, a twist on standard rye. Pretzel bites and chicken and waffles are other favorites.

A patio welcomes dogs outside, and weekend brunch adds more options. Hours run Tuesday through Friday from 11 AM to 9 PM, Saturday from 10 AM to 9 PM, and Sunday from 10 AM to 2 PM.

It is closed Mondays. Reservations are accepted and parking is usually plentiful.
