What Makes Bend's Breakfast Scene So Good? Start At These 7 Morning Spots

Bend wakes up hungry. Between early trail runs, ski mornings, and lazy weekend brunches, this Central Oregon town has built a breakfast lineup that punches well above its size.

Some of the best tables sit inside old houses, some inside a classic diner off the highway, and a few behind bakery counters stacked with croissants and cardamom rolls. The seven spots below each bring something different to the plate, from 1916 bungalow charm to Dutch babies and farm-sourced French toast.

Most of them close by 2 PM, and weekend lines are common, so timing matters. Here is where to start your morning in Bend, plus a few practical tips to help you get a seat and order well.

1. McKay Cottage Restaurant, Bend, OR

Breakfast in a house built in 1916 has a certain appeal. McKay Cottage serves its morning menu inside a restored bungalow, with tables set out on the lawn when the weather cooperates.

The menu runs long, so it pays to show up with a plan. The Baja Chicken Hash Stack is a signature pick, and the breakfast burrito and biscuits and gravy cover the classic side of things.

Sweet tooth? Lemon Ricotta Pancakes with fresh berries, Stuffed French Toast, and Mama’s Cinnamon French Toast all share space on the menu.

Freshly baked scones with homemade strawberry jam and cinnamon rolls round out the bakery side.

Vegetarians get a full menu of their own, which makes this an easy pick for mixed groups. There is a fireplace inside, a kids’ menu, and dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables.

Hours run 7 AM to 2 PM daily. Weekend mornings bring a wait, and parking can get tight, so a Tuesday visit is the calmest bet.

2. The Victorian Café, Bend, OR

Eggs Benedict lovers, this is your stop. The Victorian Café on NW Galveston Avenue has turned the Benedict into something of a house specialty, with versions like a hot chicken Benedict, a Wild Salmon Benedict, and the vegetarian Earth Harvest Benedict.

The potatoes deserve their own shout. Crispy, well-seasoned homestyle spuds come alongside most plates, and the Hobo Potatoes are a menu item all on their own.

Beyond eggs, the menu leans hearty. Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs, the Carnivore Omelet, Blueberry Pancakes, and Caramel Apple French Toast give everyone at the table an option.

The patio is a big part of the draw, complete with fire tables for cooler Bend mornings. Full vegan and vegetarian menus are available too.

Doors open at 7 AM daily and close at 2 PM. Friday through Sunday mornings get busy, while midweek is much quieter.

3. CHOW, Bend, OR

Thick-cut homemade bread is the starting point for one of the best-known plates at CHOW. The French toast arrives with fresh fruit, whipped cream, cardamom sauce, and two over-easy eggs, which covers sweet and savory in one go.

Local sourcing drives the menu here. The buttermilk fried steak uses Cascade Natural beef, and the eggs Benedict is built with organic, sustainable ingredients.

The space is a renovated house on NW Newport Avenue with an artsy, slightly quirky look and a patio out front. It fits right in with the laid-back Bend style.

Other menu picks include Corned Beef Hash, Huevos Rancheros, Eggs Ala Vinny, and house buttermilk biscuits and gravy. Gluten-free bread and homemade jam are on hand, and there are full vegan and vegetarian menus.

CHOW opens at 8 AM daily and does not take reservations. Parking is usually easy, which helps on a busy weekend.

4. Jake’s Diner, Bend, OR

Bring an appetite, or bring a friend to share. Jake’s Diner on NE Highway 20 is known for portions that can easily stretch into a second meal.

The hash browns are homemade and come in generous piles. Stuffed Hashbrowns are their own menu item, and the bacon is cooked dark and crisp.

This is a no-fuss diner with photo-lined walls and a relaxed, family-style setup. Biscuits and gravy come in a large size for a reason, and the Denver Omelet, Bacon Benedict, and Long Hauler keep the classics coming.

Early risers will like the 6 AM opening time. It is one of the cheaper stops on this list, with most meals landing in the $10 to $20 range.

Reservations are not accepted, but the staff is used to handling crowds. Parking is plentiful, which is handy for road trippers coming in off the highway.

5. The Sparrow Bakery Northwest, Bend, OR

Ask around Bend about the ocean roll and you will end up at The Sparrow. The cardamom-spiced pastry is the bakery’s calling card, and it tends to sell out, so earlier is better.

The NorthWest Crossing location has an industrial-chic look, big windows, and an outdoor courtyard. On clear days, the views outside those windows add to the stop.

Pastry fans can also pick from the Everything Croissant, Almond Croissant, Cinnamon Knot, banana bread, cookies, and macarons. For something more filling, there are breakfast sandwiches, a Lox Bagel, and a Croque Monsieur.

Sourdough is baked here too, and loaves are available to take home. Free Wi-Fi is available inside.

The bakery opens at 7 AM every day, closing at 5 PM on weekdays and 3 PM on weekends. It works well as a quick grab before heading out of town.

6. The Original Pancake House, Bend, OR

The Dutch Baby alone makes a case for this stop. The puffy, oven-baked pancake is one of the signature items at The Original Pancake House on SW Donovan Avenue.

Pancakes are the obvious focus, and the variety goes deeper than most places. Buckwheat, Swedish, and chocolate chip pancakes all have spots on the menu, along with fresh fruit crepes and Continental Crepes.

Savory eaters are covered too. Corned beef hash, ham and cheese omelets, hash browns, and Canadian Bacon and Eggs share the lineup, and the coffee is a strong point.

Breakfast is served all day in a casual dining room with a fireplace. Portions are generous, and prices mostly fall between $10 and $20 per person.

Unlike several spots on this list, this one accepts reservations, which is smart on weekends. Doors open at 6 AM daily, and parking is usually plentiful.

7. Café des Chutes, Bend, OR

For a quieter morning, I would save this one for a slow coffee and a croissant. Café des Chutes on SE Scott Street brings a European, French cafe style to the east side of the Deschutes River area.

Craft coffee and house-made pastries lead the menu. The croissants are the standout, flaky and well made, and the muffins are baked in-house too.

Breakfast sandwiches here go beyond the basics, with creative combinations on the menu. Full vegan and vegetarian menus mean plant-based diners have plenty of choice.

The atmosphere stays calm and classy, with a small courtyard for sitting outside. Free Wi-Fi makes it a solid choice for laptop work.

Ordering is at the counter, and reservations are not taken. Hours run 8 AM to 2 PM daily, and on-site parking is usually easy to find.
