Breakfast prices have climbed fast, and a simple plate of eggs can now cost more than a tank of gas used to. Still, a handful of Texas cafes keep serving hearty morning food at prices that feel like a throwback.
This list covers seven of them, from a Tex-Mex counter in San Antonio to a pie shop near Lake Whitney. Each one serves breakfast with real staying power, and several dish it up all day.
Prices change, so check the menu before you go, but these are the spots where your ten-dollar bill still has a fighting chance. Save this one for your next road trip or slow Saturday morning.
1. Blanco Cafe, San Antonio, TX

Fresh tortillas made in-house set the tone at this Blanco Road favorite. Grab a stack with your eggs and you will understand why the line forms early.
Blanco Cafe is a no-frills Tex-Mex spot that serves breakfast all day. The menu includes a dedicated Breakfast Plate, egg tacos, and plenty of coffee to go with them.
Plates run big here, and prices stay friendly for a neighborhood staple. Enchiladas and puffy tacos pull in the lunch and dinner crowd, so breakfast fans get a second reason to come back.
Doors open at 6 AM Monday through Saturday and 7 AM on Sunday. Weekends get busy, reservations are not taken, and parking can be tricky, so an early weekday visit is the smart move.
2. West Side Cafe, Fort Worth, TX

Military memorabilia lines the walls of this Camp Bowie diner, giving breakfast a side of history. It is an old-school setting with a retro look and plenty of room to spread out.
The morning lineup leans hearty. Steak and eggs, pork chops and eggs, and chicken fried steak and eggs anchor the menu, along with a breakfast burrito for something lighter.
Save room if you can. Oatmeal cake and banana pudding are house favorites, and lunch brings chicken and dumplings and fried catfish.
West Side Cafe runs daily from 7 AM to 3 PM. Parking is usually easy, and the cafe takes reservations, which helps with larger weekend groups.
3. Blue Bonnet Cafe, Marble Falls, TX

Road trippers heading through the Hill Country on US-281 know this stop by its pies. The Blue Bonnet Cafe is a true local institution in Marble Falls.
Breakfast is served all day, and it is classic comfort food. Two biscuits with gravy and hash browns is a budget-friendly pick, while French toast with meat and big cinnamon rolls cover the sweeter side.
I would plan this one around dessert. A homebaked slice of pie, plain or a la mode, makes a fine second course even at 9 AM.
Expect a wait on weekends since reservations are not accepted. Hours run 7 AM to 8 PM Monday through Saturday, with an early close on Sunday at 1:45 PM.
4. El Chaparral Cafe, El Paso, TX

Machaca is the name to know at this Montana Avenue cafe. The Plato de Machaca pairs dried shredded beef with breakfast fixings, and it is a filling way to start the day.
El Chaparral serves authentic Mexican food with all-day breakfast at reasonable prices. Huevos rancheros and chilaquiles round out the morning favorites, and the coffee earns its own fans.
Portions are generous, service moves fast, and the room tends to stay calm. Lunch brings caldo de res and gordita plates, with flan for dessert.
Hours are 8 AM to 6 PM Monday through Saturday and 8 AM to 3 PM on Sunday. Parking is free and usually plentiful.
5. Cafe Java, Austin, TX

Austin keeps changing, but Cafe Java has been serving north Austin since 1996. That kind of staying power says a lot about affordable, friendly breakfast.
The pancakes are the headline. They come out huge and fluffy, and you can order just one if your appetite is modest.
Coffee here is locally roasted and organic. The menu also includes full vegetarian and vegan options, plus sandwiches, salads, and Java Nachos for later in the day.
Breakfast runs daily from 7 AM, with dinner on weekdays until 8 PM. Free Wi-Fi, easy parking, and outdoor space where dogs are welcome make it an easy weekday stop.
6. Cafe Texan, Huntsville, TX

Not many cafes double as a museum. Cafe Texan does, sitting on Sam Houston Avenue in historic downtown Huntsville.
The kitchen cooks from scratch. Morning plates feature eggs, bacon, hash browns, and toast, with omelettes and eggs Benedict for anyone wanting more.
Chicken fried steak is a house specialty, and portions come generous at bargain prices. It is a great pick for travelers on I-45 who want a real sit-down breakfast.
Hours are short, so plan ahead. Weekdays run 8 AM to 2 PM, and weekends stretch to 4 PM.
7. Texas Great Country Café & Pie Pantry, Whitney, TX

Sweet potato pancakes are reason enough to detour toward Lake Whitney. This rustic cafe pairs them with a huge breakfast menu served all day.
Classic plates of eggs, toast, and biscuits cover the basics, and grits come on the side. Burgers, BLTs, and fried green beans take over at lunch.
The Pie Pantry part of the name is no joke. Coconut and apple pies headline a big dessert lineup.
Note the schedule: closed Wednesdays, open 8 AM to 8 PM most other days, and 8 AM to 3 PM on Sunday. There is even a drive-through for travelers in a hurry.
