You'll Crack Open Fresh Blue Crabs At These 7 Texas Gulf Coast Seafood Markets

Nothing says a Texas coast weekend quite like a table covered in newspaper and a pile of fresh blue crabs ready to crack. All along the Gulf, family-run seafood markets pull local catch straight off the boats and hand it to you by the pound.

Whether you are planning a backyard crab boil or just want the freshest shrimp for supper, these seven stops make it easy. Here are the markets worth the drive up and down the Texas coastline.

1. Rose’s Seafood Inc, Seabrook, TX

Right along Waterfront Drive in Seabrook, this large family-owned operation has built a reputation for seafood that comes in fresh off the boat. If you are anywhere near the Kemah area and want blue crab, this is one of the first names people bring up.

The selection runs deep. You will find live blue crab, live shrimp, red snapper, crawfish, squid, salmon belly and salmon heads, plus a rotating mix of different fish.

It is the kind of place where you can stock up for a full seafood boil in one trip.

Hours run Monday and Tuesday from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Thursday and Friday on the same schedule, and weekends starting a little earlier at 8 AM. Just note they are closed on Wednesdays.

Saturday mornings tend to be the busiest stretch, so an early weekday visit is your calmest bet.

Parking is easy with both free and paid lots on site. Everything is handled in person, with no delivery offered.

2. Sampson & Son’s Seafood, Galveston, TX

Tucked at Pier 21 in Galveston, right beside the well-known Katie’s Seafood, this small operation punches well above its size. It is a longtime vendor of locally caught fish and shellfish, and much of what fills the cases came off the boat that same day.

Blue crab and whole jumbo shrimp are easy grabs here, along with fresh fish and shucked oysters. The staff know their product and are happy to walk you through what is best that day.

Part of the fun is the setting. Sitting right on Galveston Bay, the pier draws pelicans that hang around out back, which makes it an entertaining stop if you bring the kids along.

Hours are Monday through Thursday from 9 AM to 4 PM, Friday and Saturday until 5 PM, and Sunday from 9 AM to 4 PM. Keep in mind there is no restroom on site, and everything is sold in person with no delivery.

3. Discount Seafood Market, Texas City, TX

When the weather turns rough and other markets sell out, this Texas City shop has a way of still having blue crab on hand. That reliability alone earns it a spot on any crab lover’s map.

Beyond live crabs, the counter carries the usual coastal favorites like red snapper, catfish and flounder, plus seasonal crawfish. Head to the freezers and you will find cooked crawfish tails, lobster tails and fresh oysters.

What sets this stop apart is that it is a one-stop shop for an entire boil. Alongside the seafood, they stock spices, roux, breading and condiments, so you can grab everything for a fish fry or Cajun boil in a single visit.

The crew will even cook your crab, fish and crawfish for you.

Hours are generally 9:30 AM to 7:30 PM most days, with a shorter Tuesday window from 11 AM to 5:30 PM and Sunday closing at 6:30 PM. Friday and Saturday afternoons draw the biggest crowds.

4. Captain Mark’s Seafood, Freeport, TX

Down in the coastal town of Freeport, Captain Mark’s covers all the bases for a seafood cook at home. The market supplies crabs, oysters, crawfish, shrimp and other local catch, and it doubles as a source for fishing bait if you plan to head out on the water.

Prices lean fair, and the fish gets cleaned well before it leaves the counter. Cooked crawfish has been offered around five dollars a pound, available live or frozen, and you will also find shrimp, crabs, lobster tails and oysters both fresh and frozen.

Check the freezers for ready-made sides too, like stuffed crab, hush puppies and minced crab meat, which round out an easy dinner.

The setup is casual counter service with takeout, no table service and no reservations. Hours run Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM and Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM, with Monday closed.

Parking is free in the lot or on the street.

5. Big Bear Shrimp and Seafood, Port Lavaca, TX

Sitting along Highway 35 in Port Lavaca with Lavaca Bay in view, Big Bear leans hard into local waters. The shrimp and crab here come from nearby, and freshness is the whole draw on the Middle Texas Coast.

The shop is kept clean and stocks fresh local seafood, which makes it an easy stop when you are passing through this stretch of coast. It also carries bait, so anglers spending time in Port Lavaca often make it a regular stop before hitting the water.

One thing to plan for: card payments may carry a surcharge, so bringing cash can save you a little. Everything is handled in person with no delivery.

Hours are generous, running Monday through Saturday from 5:30 AM to 7 PM and Sunday from 5:30 AM to 6 PM. That early opening is a gift if you like to shop before the day heats up.

Friday evening and Saturday afternoon see the most traffic.

6. Paul’s Seafood Market, Port Aransas, TX

Over on Mustang Island, Paul’s Seafood Market keeps things simple: fresh shellfish and fish you take home to grill, fry or boil. The blue crab has earned a strong following for being large, sweet and consistently fresh.

The cases here go well beyond crab. You might spot huge whole grouper, redfish, red snapper, oysters and scallops, plus fresh packaged fish and snow crab if you are building a full boil.

It is the sort of market where you can walk out with everything for a beach-town seafood spread.

There is a companion location in Corpus Christi, so if you are bouncing around the coast you have two chances to catch that blue crab.

Hours are wide open, seven days a week from 8 AM to 7 PM. Afternoons midweek through Saturday tend to be the busy windows, while evenings run quieter.

Everything is sold in person with no delivery offered.

7. Jane’s L-Head Seafood House, Corpus Christi, TX

Location is half the charm at Jane’s L-Head. Set at Coopers Alley right on the marina, you can shop for seafood while taking in a view of boats lined up along Corpus Christi Bay.

The shop works as a bait-and-tackle supplier and a seafood market rolled into one, offering fresh catch you can take home to cook or boil. Live blue crab and live bait are both on hand, which is handy whether you are planning dinner or a fishing trip.

Staff here are known for being genuinely helpful, and the folks behind the counter can walk you through the best seasoning for whatever you pick up. Prices stay fair, and the seafood turns over fresh.

Hours are long and welcoming, opening at 5:30 AM every day and closing at 9 PM most nights, with Friday and Saturday running until 10 PM. Sunday afternoons and Saturday evenings get busy.

A restroom on site is a nice bonus for a marina stop.
