You'll Find Kansas's Best Grilled Cheeseburgers Hiding At These 8 Roadside Griddles

Some of the best cheeseburgers in Kansas come off flat-top griddles at old drive-ins and tiny counters you might pass without a second look. These places keep things simple, with fresh beef, melted American cheese, hand-cut fries, and shakes made the old way.

Many of them have been feeding their towns for generations, and they still draw crowds at lunch. If you like a burger with real character and a price that will not sting, this list is for you.

1. Bobo Drive In, Topeka, KS

Topeka has plenty of places to grab lunch, but few carry the kind of hometown status this little drive-in on SW 10th Avenue enjoys. Bobo Drive In has the look of a 50s and 60s diner and the menu to match.

The cheeseburger is the order to start with. It comes juicy and classic, and the Double Cheeseburger and Onion Rings combo gives you a bigger plate with crispy rings on the side.

Chili cheese fries are another popular pick.

Save room for the World Famous Apple Pie. It is served hot, and plenty of people top it with ice cream.

The homemade root beer and shakes round things out nicely.

Bobo’s has drive-through service, free parking, and a kids’ menu. It is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and closed Sundays.

Friday and Saturday evenings get busy, so a weekday lunch is the easier visit.

2. Grandstand Burgers, Overland Park, KS

Blink on Merriam Drive and you might miss it. Grandstand Burgers is a tiny, vintage-style burger stand with picnic seating instead of a dining room, and that is a big part of its charm.

Burgers are grilled to order, and the menu leans generous. The Bacon Double Cheeseburger is a favorite, and the Bacon Triple Cheeseburger is there for anyone who is very hungry.

The Double Fire Burger brings some heat.

Sides are fun too. You can split your basket with half fries and half onion rings, or half fries and half tots.

Corn nuggets and real handmade shakes are on the list as well.

A few practical notes help here. There is no restroom, seating is outside, and dogs are welcome.

Expect a wait on Saturdays. Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Monday through Saturday.

Short hours and a long line tell you plenty about Ty’s Diner. This long-standing Wichita spot is only open from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and people plan their lunch around it.

The burgers are cooked on a flat grill with grilled onions pressed right in. Pickles and mustard keep the classic version simple and tangy.

If you want more going on, try the Ultimate cheeseburger. It adds grilled onions, jalapeños, and bacon, and it has a strong reputation around town.

Fresh-cut fries and onion rings are the sides to know, and a bowl of chili is also on the menu. The setting is cozy and historic.

Tuesday and Wednesday are the calmer days, while Saturday afternoons fill up fast.

4. Buster’s Burger Joint, Wichita, KS

Value is the headline at Buster’s. In October 2025, a double cheeseburger combo with fries and a canned soda ran about $10, which is hard to beat for a burger this good.

The place is a small, no-frills joint on East MacArthur Road. There is nothing fancy about the room, and that suits the food just fine.

Go for the Double Cheese Burger and Fries. You can also swap in onion rings, or pick tater tots or a sweet potato side.

Plan ahead, because Buster’s keeps a tight schedule. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There is outdoor seating and plenty of free parking.

Ordering a whole bag of burgers is normal here. R-B Drive In in Hutchinson offers a Bag of Burgers, which tells you this family-owned spot takes its griddle seriously.

The burgers are smashed and made with fresh beef. If one is not enough, the half-pound R-B Special Burger is the jumbo option.

A patty melt and a BLT are on the menu too.

Sides go beyond the usual. There are home-cut fries, homemade onion rings, cream corn nuggets, and even funnel cake fries.

Shakes and malts finish the meal.

Hours vary by day, so check before you go. Most days it closes at 4 p.m., but Thursday runs until 8 p.m. and Friday until 5:30 p.m.

Want something different? Try the Philly Cheese Steak Fries.

Corn dogs, chicken strips, a fish sandwich, and mozzarella sticks fill out the menu.

Dessert is a strong point, with creamy soft serve and a Hot Fudge Brownie. Vista has a drive-through, curbside pickup, high chairs, and a kids’ menu.

It stays open until 10 p.m. most nights and 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, which helps the college crowd.

Augusta sits just east of Wichita, and its State Street drive-in gives road trippers a good excuse to stop. Miller’s Five has a nostalgic, old-fashioned feel and a short, focused menu.

Fresh hamburgers are the main event. The Giant cheeseburger is a double, and the deluxe cheeseburger adds the classic toppings.

Both pair well with the fries.

Fried corn fritters are a fun side, and malts and shakes are made in the old style. Prices stay friendly for families.

There is outdoor seating, but no restroom, so plan accordingly. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday until 7:30 p.m.

8. Bob’s Grill, Pittsburg, KS

With only about 35 seats, Bob’s Grill fills up quickly, and that small size is part of what makes it fun. Oldies music from the 50s and 60s plays in this classic Pittsburg diner.

Doors open at 5 a.m., and breakfast is a big draw thanks to low prices and good coffee. By lunch, the flat top grill turns to burgers.

The double cheeseburger with fresh-cut fries is the order to know. It is simple and hot off the grill.

Parking can be tight. You can park in the back and use either the back or front door.

Bob’s closes at 1:30 p.m. most days, but reopens from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

From Topeka to Pittsburg, these griddles prove a great Kansas cheeseburger rarely needs much fuss. Pick one on your next drive and see which one becomes your favorite.
