You'll Find The Last Real Soda Fountains In Maryland At These 5 Old Pharmacies And Shops

Remember when a trip to the drugstore could end with a float at the counter? A few places in Maryland still keep that tradition going, with spinning stools, hand-mixed sodas, and shakes poured into old-school glasses.

Some sit inside working pharmacies, while others are small-town shops built around the fountain itself. If you love a little nostalgia with your lunch, these five spots are worth saving for your next day out.

1. The Fountain, Dundalk, MD

Walk past the pharmacy shelves at Dundalk’s longtime Drug City, and you’ll reach a counter that looks lifted straight from a 1950s five-and-dime. The Fountain sits at the back of the store at 2805 North Point Road, and it leans fully into the old Woolworth’s lunch counter style.

The menu centers on handcrafted sodas, floats, and classic lunch fare. Soda jerks still work the counter, which is a rare sight anywhere these days.

Prices land around $10 to $20 per person, and there’s a kids’ menu plus high chairs for younger fountain fans. Free parking is usually easy to find.

Hours run Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 7 PM and Sunday from 10 AM to 4:30 PM. Weekday mornings tend to be the quietest time to grab a stool.

2. Rayne’s Reef Soda Fountain & Grill, Berlin, MD

Milkshakes here come with a show. Grab a seat at the counter, and you can watch them blended in an old-school mixer with a stainless steel cup, then poured into a vintage soda glass.

Rayne’s Reef has been a fixture on North Main Street since around 1901, right in the middle of Berlin’s charming historic district. The grill sits out by the counter, so the whole operation happens in plain view.

The menu sticks to diner favorites. Think build-your-own burgers, tuna melts on rye, grilled cheese with ham, egg sandwiches, and breakfast sides like scrapple.

On the fountain side, look for ice cream sodas, cherry cola, and sundaes. Portions are generous, and most meals fall in the $10 to $20 range.

Plan carefully, because it’s closed Mondays and Fridays. Other days run 8 AM to 5 PM, reservations aren’t taken, and parking downtown can get tight, so weekday visits are the calmer bet.

3. Stam’s Luncheonette, Chestertown, MD

Chestertown’s historic downtown already looks like a postcard, and Stam’s on High Street fits right in. The space was renovated to reflect its past as a pharmacy with an ice cream, float, and soda bar.

I’d save this one for a slow Eastern Shore afternoon. The menu covers classic sandwiches and lunch plates, with a full vegetarian menu for anyone skipping meat.

Dessert is the real draw. House-made ice cream and old-fashioned fountain sodas make it easy to turn lunch into a float stop.

Stam’s is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. It opens at 11 AM the rest of the week, staying until 8 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, and outdoor seating and free street parking add to the easy pace.

4. Charlesmead Pharmacy Inc, Baltimore, MD

Picking up a prescription and a milkshake in the same trip sounds like a 1950s habit. At Charlesmead Pharmacy on Bellona Avenue, it still works that way.

This is a true working pharmacy, with helpful pharmacists and delivery service. Tucked inside is a lunch counter turning out burgers, shakes, and other soda fountain treats.

The whole place carries a time-capsule look that makes browsing the aisles part of the fun.

Keep the hours in mind. It’s open weekdays from 9 AM to 6 PM and Saturdays from 9 AM to 2 PM, closed Sundays, with a free parking lot out front.

5. Soda Jerk Ice Cream, Rising Sun, MD

Picking a soda for your float takes real decision-making in Rising Sun. Soda Jerk Ice Cream stocks a big lineup of craft and small-batch sodas, plus glass-bottle Coke options.

The idea is simple and fun. Choose an old-time soda, pair it with your ice cream flavor, and build a personalized float.

The shop has a retro 1950s look, and root beer floats are a staple on the menu. It’s counter service only, so expect a quick visit.

Find it at 26B Rising Sun Town Center in this small Cecil County town. It’s open daily from noon until 9 PM, staying open until 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

Dogs are welcome outside, and parking is free on site. That makes it an easy summer evening stop for the whole crew.
