Seven Michigan Supper Spots Still Serve Perch Dinners The Old Great Lakes Way

Ask anyone who grew up near the Great Lakes about supper, and lake perch will come up fast. The little fish with the big following has been a Michigan menu staple for generations, served fried, piled high, and paired with slaw and tartar sauce.

Plenty of restaurants still treat the perch dinner like the main event, not an afterthought. This list covers seven of them, from a historic South Haven dining room to a small-town cafe near Saginaw Bay.

Some sit right on the water with views of passing freighters and boats. Others are tucked into old mills, river towns, and crossroads communities where the perch dinner is a weekly habit.

Each one earns its spot for a different reason, so you can pick based on scenery, budget, or how hungry you are. Save it for your next road trip along the lakeshore.

1. Clementine’s, South Haven, MI

South Haven is a small harbor town, but its perch dinners have a big reputation, and Clementine’s is a big reason why. The restaurant sits inside a historic building at 500 Phoenix St, right in the heart of town.

The menu stretches well beyond fish, with steak dinners, pasta, and grilled classics. Still, perch and walleye dinners are the plates that keep tables turning, and the kitchen is generous with ranch dressing for dunking.

Don’t skip Clems Homemade Onion Rings. They are a house specialty and a natural partner for a fried fish plate.

A few practical notes help here. Clementine’s does not take reservations, and there is usually a wait, with Saturday afternoon into evening the busiest stretch.

Hours run 11 AM to 8:30 PM most days and until 9 PM Thursday through Saturday. Free lot and street parking make it easy after a day at the beach.

A kids’ menu and high chairs make it an easy call for families, too.

2. Boone’s Long Lake Inn, Traverse City, MI

An old mill outside Traverse City might seem like an odd place to hunt for fish, yet Boone’s Long Lake Inn turns out generous portions of fried perch alongside its famous prime rib.

Most people know Boone’s as a steak and seafood house. The 12 oz Prime Rib Dinner gets plenty of attention, and the menu also includes crab legs, scallops, and shrimp.

The perch, though, holds its own. It is the kind of plate that makes surf-or-turf decisions genuinely hard.

The setting leans warm and rustic, with a fireplace inside and live music on weekends. Outdoor seating is available, and dogs are allowed outside.

Boone’s opens at 4 PM Monday through Saturday and at noon on Sunday. Friday and Saturday evenings are the busiest, so reservations are smart, and they are accepted.

Expect to spend a bit more here, roughly $30 to $70 per person.

3. Marine City Fish Company, Marine City, MI

Freighters glide past the patio while you eat. That alone makes Marine City Fish Company one of the most memorable perch stops in the state.

The restaurant sits on S Water St in this small river town, with a balcony overlooking commercial ships and private boats. Inside, the walls are packed with memorabilia.

The perch is panko-breaded and deep-fried, and the tartar sauce has a noticeable dill flavor that sets it apart. The Fish Company Spread is another menu highlight worth sharing at the table.

Plan ahead. Dinner reservations are recommended, there is often a wait, and parking can be tricky to find on busy days.

The restaurant is closed Mondays. It opens at 11 AM Tuesday through Saturday and at noon on Sunday, with later hours on Friday and Saturday.

4. Castaways, Bay City, MI

Four large perch fillets on one fish sandwich. That is the kind of math that puts Castaways on a perch lover’s map.

This lively riverside spot on Boy Scout Rd has an outdoor patio with views of the water and a bridge. The vibe is casual, and live music and sports keep things moving.

The perch dinner is a standout, and the garlic bread earns its own fans. Walleye, hand-breaded cod, and Key West shrimp round out the seafood side.

Not in a fish mood? The Island Burger and Brisket Tacos show the kitchen’s range, and smoked brisket appears elsewhere on the menu.

Castaways is also the budget pick of this list at roughly $10 to $20 per person. It stays open until 10 or 11 PM most nights and serves breakfast hours on Sunday starting at 9 AM.

Parking is usually plentiful.

5. Chateau Louise Restaurant, Luna Pier, MI

Luna Pier is home to fewer than 1,500 people, and it sits right on Lake Erie. Chateau Louise gives the town a perch dinner that draws people from well beyond the city limits.

The perch comes in large pieces with a light breading that adds flavor without feeling greasy. Pair it with a salad and the thick, creamy blue cheese dressing.

Keep an eye out for all-you-can-eat lake perch night. It has been offered at around $19, which is a strong deal for perch this close to its home waters.

The menu also covers seafood tacos, chicken parmesan, and Filet Mignon. Save room for the cheesecake.

Outdoor seating looks toward downtown Luna Pier, and there is a fireplace inside for cooler months. Note the hours: closed Monday, dinner only on Tuesday from 4 to 8 PM, and lunch and dinner the rest of the week.

Reservations are accepted.

6. Boatwerks Waterfront Restaurant, Holland, MI

If your idea of supper includes a lake view and a slightly dressier setting, Boatwerks in Holland fits the bill. The light-filled dining room and patio face Lake Macatawa, which connects to Lake Michigan.

The Fried Perch Dinner sits right on the menu highlights, and it holds up as one of the kitchen’s best plates. Walleye, calamari, and salmon give seafood fans other options.

Start with the Seafood Chowder or Fried Shrimp Tacos. Homemade desserts close things out nicely.

Boatwerks leans a little more upscale than others on this list, yet prices stay around $20 to $30 per person. It also offers a full vegetarian and vegan menu, which is handy for mixed groups.

Dinner reservations are recommended since waits are common, especially Friday evening and Saturday. On-site and street parking are both available.

7. Linwood Corners Cafe, Linwood, MI

Some of the best perch suppers happen at a counter-style cafe, not a waterfront dining room. Linwood Corners Cafe proves it in a tiny Saginaw Bay community where fishing is part of daily life.

The famous perch lunch comes with coleslaw that gets plenty of attention on its own. Perch and fries make an easy dinner, too.

Home-style cooking runs the whole menu. Breakfast regulars come for omelets with fresh homemade bread and strawberry jam, and there is a variety of pies for dessert.

Prices are friendly at about $10 to $20 per person, and portions are big. The cafe is open every day from 7 AM to 8 PM.

Sunday morning through afternoon is the busiest stretch, and reservations are not taken. Weekday evenings are much quieter if you want a relaxed perch supper.
